It isn’t a mess. It’s a fact that System Protection is disabled by default in Windows 10. If it is disabled, Windows is not able to create restore points.
So this problem is actually caused by the user who wasn’t aware of this fact.
Most users don’t delve into the OS settings until they experience a problem. If they don’t know about it, how are they to know what the problem is and what to do about it

Decided to reinstall Avast right off the bat, as figured used it for many many many years, and it does provide excellent protection, and finally leaving Defender alone for once–hopefully that lasts, and Ignore all the other forums around the net that say sometimes Avast not needed lol.
Performance so far great
Tomorrow updating Laptop hopefully from Windows Update over the top, and hopefully that goes smoothly, only a few games on Laptop, and Office 365, not much on that machine, and a little bit of HP programs
Moms Desktop might be a challenge, 5 to 6 years old, hopefully still supported
Overall very happy, Testing gaming performance later on
