Windows 10 : how your personal data is (ab)used.

If you want to get away from abuse or if you dont want any data collection then throw your PC out of the window

Hi Rednose & Steven Winderlich,

Why one thinks it is that Windows 10 is offered as a free update then? Answer that basic question and you know some of the answers.

Throwing your computer or smartphone out of the window is no option of course. We see it is an opt-out situation only, so all that stay with the default settings will have these new privacy issues. We know the modern trends and MS is following the market of to-day - see what software bundlers do everyday.

For me the most annoying part is that the new technology will make it harder and harder to block personalised ads, but it isn’t as bad yet as on a Google Chrome OS where you cannot use a decent adblocker even for your own protection against malvertising, and that is a real threat. When MS decides to go the same way as Google does then they are certainly crossing a line for me - they will hand in our security for their marketing model by selling insecurities as “features or benefits” & “awesome user friendliness”. We always had this situation, this is nothing new in this world, only the technological means make it so much harder to circumvent.

Agreed Pol, in that case I’ll be off to Linux.

It’s the same for me

Did this updates fail because I canceled my reservation or was wind 10 going to be installed automatically?

See screenshow.

The first security updates to the brand new Windows 10 also have been applied. Here we mean MS15-074 and MS15-078. Resp. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/MS15-074 & https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/MS15-078
It could have been that this caused your hick-ups, -midnight.
Oh, and disable flash in Edge!

polonus

Automatically tried to install today, July 30 but failed.

I ccan’t disable flash in Edge because I don’t have win 10 installed.

Hi Friends. If you are eager to get Windows 10 and don’t want to wait till christmas, I strongly suggest you Google in “install windows 10” to land up on the microsoft web site were you can download the proper iso image (32 or 64 bits) to burn a DVD for upgrading. If you want to save your applications and personnal files, just open the pc, put in the DVD, plug the internet wire, and click on the iso. Took me about 4 hours to install on a up-to-date win 8.1 laptop and…20 hrs to find the way to burn the file. Personnaly, it worked from Ubuntu. Warn you some drivers are still to be worked on. See how they go, if you loose some functionality like with my touchpad on my desktop were I couldn’t scroll anymore, just roll back to the last one driver you had. I think going to Windows 10 is a move that is the way to go because of the extended support for example!

Since installing Windows 10 I’ve been unable to connect to any foreign or domestic VPN through SecureLine VPN. Anyone have a clue as to why this is no longer functional? Thanks.

Yes, sorry, with my touchpad, I was talking of rolling back to the old drivers. The new ones are often still in the working stage and don’t work 100%!!!

I’m running windows 10 Pro and as you can see Avast’s SecureLine VPN works just fine.

THANKS

I personally had a Microsoft tech explain to me today that any iso’s for win 10 on their website are tech previews and Microsoft had not yet released any iso’s for the final release, if you install via one of those iso’s it’ll be revoked within the year.

I was going to use one of the iso’s as the upgrade screwed my system so bad that even flashing an earlier image and numerous fixes failed to fix the problem to which I was left with the choice of letting a Microsoft tech take control of my system for 2 hours to fix the issue, it was this tech who instructed me not to use any Win 10 iso…even the ones on the Microsoft website.

Will the people who don’t install win 10 still get the 2nd Tuesday updates?

I came across this in Canada, I think due diligence and persistence is the ticket.

By the way I had to switch to FF to post due to Buttons/Insert Hyperlink etc on this forum is not supported in MS EDGE :-
All works as expected on MBAM forum with Smiles and MS edge.

What you should be using is the Windows Media Creation Tool

This is the win 10 update that has tried to install on my win 8.1 and win 7 computers. No wonder it failed 8 times.

@abruptum,

Some of the info Windows 10 gathers is just for reasons of end-user security.
a - Why info is gathered (because it is needed to let Windows 10 function properly).
b - because certain functionality is not working properly (unless that info is being gathered).
c - When you do not want your surf history known, you cannot get protection against malicious sites.
d - When you do not want your apps info being transfered, you cannot have protection against malicious or insecure apps.

So the privacy picture is not as black and white as some like to present it.
