Windows 10 failed update to 1803, maybe an Avast problem?

Looking for some help on this problem. My laptop is a victim of the windows 10 update/Avast software problem. I got the blue screen asking to select my language, etc., but nothing happened. Now my screen shows only the recycle icon in the corner. I’ve followed the suggestions to download Windows on a flash drive. I’ve plugged the flash drive into a USB port on my laptop, but nothing is happening. How do I get it to re-install Windows? I’ve been at this all day and really can’t find a solution. Help!

Windows 10 did an update ( normally it asks, but not this time), and I came home basically to a blue brick. Same as others posting, keyboard layout then next page gives various options that are useless . I have tried everyone to no avail, the furthest I have made it to was an older version, but it will not accept my password. Nothing I do works. I also made Create Windows 10 installation media USB, but that does not work. Tried getting into the command prompt reads not enough memory resouses and x:\windows\system32. Bios, does not give me options that I have seen online from microsoft ect. I would like if somone could go step by step for things for me to try, and do them one at a time. Not a computer expert, but I have always been able to resolve my problems in the 17 years being a computer user. HELP thanks :slight_smile:

I have a question that hopefully someone can help me with.

The 1803 update is downloaded to my computer and I have postponed the install for about week, but any restart will install it. That said, I have uninstalled Avast entirely and backed up my important data. My question is, do you think it will be safe for me let the updates install now or should I wait? Also, since the folks at Avast said they have a fix, should I reinstall Avast so that is it all up to date and then disable the shields temporarily?

I’m really lost on what to do, and I’m so incredibly worried.

You can uninstall the Avast antivirus solution before the upgrade and reinstall the app after upgrading to Windows 10 version 1803. You can always delay the deployment of Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

In the comments of another article I’ve seen, people were saying that a simple uninstall did not help them.

Before installing Windows 10 Version 1803 I uninstalled Avast. After the installation the Windows refused to boot though I had not reinstalled Avast.

A backup of your system is still recommended but, that’s up to you.

I would also disable any other programs that run in the background. Once that’s done, Update to 1803.
Once that process has completed re-install the latest version of Avast.

The technique that Vlk described cannot work for me, because when I go to “Use another operating system” and I choose “Windows 10 on volume X”, it opens Blue Screen of Death - every time. Before that, it opened the login section (I couldn’t log in), but after few times restarting computer and choosing “Windows 10 on volume X”, it started showing me that Blue Screen of Death, mentioned above. So how can I continue?

You may not be able to. You may need to rely on your backup and if you don’t have one, you’ll need to start from scratch.
If starting from scratch is your only option, then the first thing to do after a new install is to make a backup.

I have not installation CD of Windows 10, because i have OEM version of it.

But I will backup my data with some Live USB Linux.

Luukjr: I followed your suggestion and downloaded Avastclear on a USB, but could not get my laptop to run from the USB. I have just the recycle icon on the screen. Thanks, and other suggestions?

It seems very irresponsible that Microsoft doesn’t ask customers to confirm that they have an up to date backup immediately before permitting a feature update to start. Even a weekly backup could result in the loss of vital and irreplaceable information.

A disaster like this has been waiting to happen since Windows 10 started forcing updates that could only be avoided for a few hours.

I’m currently using an Android tablet, and reluctant to risk switching my Windows laptop on, even though I’ve switched Avast to passive mode.

For those who are trying to delay the installation, I would suggest going into the Windows folder and finding where the WU update files are stored when they’ve been downloaded, and deleting them. Microsoft can probably only stop machines running Avast from starting the download. When it’s already downloaded, it might not require Microsoft’s permission to start the update process.

What use is Avast’s Behaviour Shield, if when it encounters something odd, it doesn’t give a warning, but just corrupts the process and bricks the computer?

How to solve error 1803

  1. Turn on computer

  2. At the blue screen, choose your keyboard layout language.

  3. Choose “Use another operating System”.

  4. Choose the second option, "windows 10 on volume x Fig -3.

  5. Wait for the computer to boot to the desktop.

  6. Once the desktop attempts to load, close any error message.

  7. On a functioning Window Pc, go to www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/window10

  8. Click “Download tool now”. Disable any antivirus on the functional PC before proceeding to step #9

  9. Run the tool you downloaded, and follow the simple steps to create a windows 10 installlation USB stick. This will erase any existing
    contents of your usb drive. The only option you should check is if it is a 64-bit or a 32-bit.

  10. On the problem computer, right-click any blank area on the task bar or where the task bar use to be on the bottom of the screen,
    then click “Task Manager”.

  11. Click “More Details” so that you can see the menu bar.

  12. Click File

  13. Click “Run new Task”

  14. In the dialog box that appears check the box “Create this task with administrative privileges”

  15. Click Browse

  16. Navigate to your Usb Drive on left and select “setup.exe”

  17. Run the file and follow the steps to "upgrade " Windows, change the option from “Check for and download updates” to “Not Right
    Now” and uncheck “help make this installation of windows better”. If you are asked what you want to keep make sure you tell it to
    keep everything.

  18. Let the process run, which may take sometime. Once completed, should be back to normal. You may need to re-login in to Microsoft.

I managed to get around this problem. I was able to launch a command prompt 8) by clicking the Ease-of-Access button (bottom right) on the sign-in screen. From there, I added a new administrator user with a highly-secure password:

net user /add NewUser password
net localgroup administrators NewUser /add

I was then able to log in as this user and follow the suggested steps.
