Windows 10 problem with Avast

Last night I downloaded/installed Windows 10. My AVAST firewall is now turned off and when I try to turn it back on, I get a message saying it cannot. Windows Defender is NOT running. Hints?

I cwturley. Welcome to the forums.

First make sure Windows Defender is deactivated completely.

Reboot a couple of time. Wait 2-3 min between reboots so that the system settle down.

I’m using Avast Internet Security and this worked for me. The problem is not with the Avast software. When Windows 10 is installed it selects Windows Defender as the default antivirus/Internet security program. This blocks the Avast software from functioning properly. To fix this, you will need to go into the Windows 10 settings pages, and completely shut down Windows Defender. Open up the settings page and look for the security tab. Open up the security tab and look for Windows Defender in the menus sidebar. There are three items on the Windows Defender homepage: Real – time protection, Cloud – based protection, and Sample submission. Turn off all three, close settings, and restart your computer. This should allow your Avast software to start up properly and block Windows Defender.

Yes, but in Windows 10, on my Windows Defender page, all the options to turn off are greyed out so it is impossible to do anything.
I also have Avast Internet Security which has stops and starts in scheduled scanning, sometimes it scans and sometimes it doesn’t, and I do not want to uninstall Avast Internet Security as it has been paid for.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

Have you rebooted since installing windows 10 ?

Have you repaired Avast ?
