Avast Free
Windows 10x 64 new PC (clear)
installed Avast Free
can’t update neither virus definition nor application itself.
Please help.
On both updates get “Unknownn Error” in Last Error field.
Also can’t login to my Avast account (inside Avast application) to register this PC with correct account name and password.
Please help.
App version: 17.4.2294 (build 17.4.3482.0)
- Other security related software installed…?
- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
No, nothing installed. There was preinstalled OEM version of McAfee but it was uninstalled.

McAfee can be difficult to completely remove.
It is completely removed
It looks like avast’s Internet connection problem but I can’t imagine what could cause that. I’ve even created firewall rules for avast, still no luck
Repair Avast:
- Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → Avast
- Click on ‘Repair’.
- Follow instructions.
- Reboot.
Still same results
Both update and account login inside avast doesn’t work. Could it be that it tries to connect and download from incorrect URLs?
Because testing http://v4618535.vpsnitro.u.avast.com/vpsnitro gives 404 (Not found) error.
- Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
- Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
- Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
- Reboot.
This didn’t help as well. Unfortunately, I’ve just discovered that this might be a just more global problem and may be here (in UAE) Avast’s update servers are blocked or so by ISPs. As now all my other PCs started to get the same problem with updating. Although this worked fine for couple of years here. The latest automatic update received is dated by the end of April.
You could set your DNS to the one from Google and see if that is helping.
Another thing you could try is using IPV4 and check if it works.
If not, use IPV6 and check again.
THANK YOU!
Changing DNS to Google did the trick!
Seems like your ISP is blocking the update servers from avast in their DNS server.
Which is really stupid of course.
They do allow you to visit the avast website, download avast but next they do not let you update it.
So what do they want ?
Block avast or not ? ???
Nobody knows
Thank you again.
