any ideas what to look for in registry? what to change/delete?
aswFsBlk; aswMonFlt; aswRdr; aswRvrt; aswSnx; aswSP; aswTdi; aswVmm; avast! AntivirusThese are the related services to delete
I couldn’t find any of the services listed, any in connection to avast. after the registry search I ran FRST scan again and found asw… drivers listed as before.
I don’t know how … they are deleted, and I couldn’t find them in registry.
Could you delete the current copy of FRST and download a fresh one please
I have used regedit to find and delete all asw… related services (i used win 7 dvd and regedit in it for that)
I ran a fresh version of FRST to make the scan and finally there are no avast drivers listed.
Unfortunately that didn’t help in starting windows. Something else is causing this … did I maybe delete something I shoudn’t have (as I described earlier … http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=140187.msg1022007#msg1022007)
There is that possibility, alas it looks like you will need to re-install
tnx for all your help and attempts!
Sorry we could not resolve this
I’ve installed win 7 again but I am reluctant to install avast.
I have read about a lot of similar problems on this and other forums … people having to reinstall windows and loose a lot of time, because of some corrupt avast drivers.
Can someone suggest to me a specific version of the free avast anti virus that wouldn’t cause any trouble in the future? Is there a problem with a specific version or with windows 7 x64?
The majority of problems with aswvmm are not actually related to Avast as windows will only let you know the last driver that loaded properly
You could try Avast 8 from Oldapps but eventually you will have to upgrade to V9
For what it’s worth, I have come across this problem numerous times in my job since the upgrade from avast! 8 to avast! 9. The tell-tale signature, from my point of view, is the loading of Windows into safe mode and at the bottom of the scrolled list of drivers/services started, just before it boots into the gui, you see aswVmm.sys and aswRvrt.sys.
The first repair option is System Restore. If I cannot get to the Windows desktop or a command prompt by booting from the hard drive, I’ll use a Windows ERD CD or a Windows installation DVD to get to a command prompt for that OS.
If System Restore fails, which is often the case unfortunately, I’ll uninstall avast! completely using RevoUninstaller in safe mode and reboot. This has worked in all of the cases where a Windows PC has failed to boot up or simply restarts in an infinite loop and those two files are the last in the list (see attached img).
Thereafter, reinstalling avast! has also always worked, with the problem not recurring on the affected machines.
I’ve seen this manifest itself on XP, Vista and 7 PCs, x86 as well as x64, so it really seems to be quite independent of the OS. I’ve not yet seen it on an 8 PC, but that could just be coincidence, I wouldn’t wish to comment either way. I’ve also seen this manifest itself on PC’s where the user have inadvertently upgraded from avast! free to an avast! paid product.
If the system will not boot how can you install revo, and use it? I cannot get anything but recovery console.
I’ve never used RevoUninstaller but looks like it has command line support.
I can only assume you use O/S or Recovery CD to get to command prompt then Revo from there.
Look at page 62: http://www.revouninstaller.com/manuals/RevoUninstallerProUsersmanual.pdf
At worst, if you cannot get an ERD or any version of Windows up at all, boot up using a Unix boot CD. I love Puppy because I have it on my USB stick and it has all the tools I need in a hurry. Then once you have an OS on the screen, go into the hard drive file system and just delete the avast! directory in Programmes
or Program Files (x86)
. That’ll let you back into Windows to re-install avast!.
