Windows 7 NetClient high CPU usage

I’ve been seeing this more and more on my Windows 7 clients. As far as I can tell, XP is not affected. What’s happening is Avast NetClient, specifically aswServ.exe *32 (my Windows 7 systems are all 64-bit) will use 50% of the processor when the system is doing something. For example, I was just installing programs on a new laptop, and the service used 50%. Windows updates, same story. I’ve had some complaints from a Vista user, but I’m not sure if it’s related or not. Is there anything specifically I can do to stop this? I don’t want to deploy very nice new systems only to be crippled by an out-of-control package. I also don’t want to lose scanning .exe’s or anything like that.

ADNM is at build 4.8.975, clients are using engine 4.8.1038.

aswserv is supposed to be the main program.

how are your scan settings? i run Win 7 x64 without problems, even tho my processor load if most of the time on 100% from the BOINC programs i run.
the avast i never saw goin above 35 to 45 % and that was while actively scanning…

did u put the default settings on heuristic scanning and scan every single file and look into every archive possible with expending the archives?
(i called one of my ADNM jobs extreme paranoia which does exactly that) if u did then its not too weird that it is happening

point being: check your settings which are the default for the on-access scanner, if there is something that is set to be scanning deeper the a quick scan then its common that the processor load goes up

That was it, thanks. Looks like I had the equivalent of your paranoid list. Still not sure why 7 became so unusable while XP didn’t seem to mind as much, but whatever.

i guess that Win 7 handles disk access (slightly) different then XP does, depending the combination of the kind of connection of the disk (ata, sata, scsi)… cant figure more then this without having the machine in my hands
