Windows 7 Sleep problem

Hi Guys,

I am 100% sure this is the issue, I have reinstalled windows (factory reset) 5 times since yesterday checking different variations of programs and have found it’s avast.

When I have avast free installed, and my computer sleeps, when it wakes up, it has processor lagspikes (not internet connection).

Also after the sleep/wake up, will not shut down, logs me out then stays on ‘shutting down’ screen.

Please don’t tell me it’s anything else other than avast conflicting with something I have painstakingly tested to make sure before I posted here.

Packard bell i3 with windows 7.

Thanks in advance.

When you factory reset are you uninstalling the AV that came with it prior to installaing Avast (generally either Norton or McAfee)

Hi Thanks for reply,

Yes of course I am.

As I said it is Avast conflicting with windows 7.

Not anything else.

I even tried uninstalling everything and only having avast.

It’s def avast conflicting with my windows 7, someone else must have this issue?

Sorry but I can’t believe I’m the only person with this problem

Surely someone else has or have heard of this before?

I know you mentioned uninstalling the factory AV but did you run the vendor’s removal tool to delet remnants? as the remnants can conflict with avast, cleanup removal tools for other AV’s can be found here http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Hi and thanks for your reply.

Yes, I did that.

Tried that link, and got a cant connect error.

Link works fine here.

That would suggest some incompatibilty with Avast and a driver on your system

Do you have any minidumps in your C:\windows\minidumps folder ?

I just factory reset again and am now using no anti virus.

I guess as long as I only stay on trusted sites like this, bbc, ebay etc I won’t need an anti virus. I’ve tried everything else and AVG is useless im not going back to that

What we could do is try to determine where the conflict is if you are game

Yea I’d love too

Basically as it stands I have a fresh install, removed all the bundled crap and installed all my programs. Running fine when I go into sleep. But if I install avast I will get the same problems.

How will we work out what the conflict is?

Don’t want to interrupt your problem solving, but I can validate existence of your symptoms. What you are describing is happening in my system as well (avast! free edition, and Windows 7).
I have not done the extensive resets that you have. But if I do a hard re-boot, start-up in Safe Mode, uninstall avast!, and re-install avast!(pulled down uninstall file, and latest install through another working pc to flash drive, and transferred over to the effected pc) the machine comes back to normal operation…
…Of course I am not implying this is a solution, only further evidence (I think) that your diagnosis of an avast! vs. Windows 7 conflict has merit.

Thanks for posting.

What computer are you using?

Toshiba laptop (Satellite? Not at keyboard now), Win7 (Home Premium?). Bunch of Toshiba background junk is in there, but it hasn’t been a problem in the past.
Should also mention how recent this issue has appeared. Have been using avast! free for ~9 months now, with no real issues. Makes me think a recent update (either in Windows, or from avast!.. my money is on avast) triggered it. Wish I was observant enough to say exactly when.

May well be worth using that option as it will be faster that running the clean boot sequence

I think it has something to do with an update too. Because when I do a fresh install, then install avast before I do updates the problem happens. as soon as I get my pc all up to date the problem happens. Maybe it’s the windows remover tool or something?

It could well be - mayhap get up to date then do a full uninstall/install of Avast and se if it re-occurs

what does mayhap mean

Sorry I am a very old Englishman as my language reflects ;D

That means do all the windows updates and then uninstall/reinstall Avast. As one of the many updates you are getting may be causing problems
