I am 100% sure this is the issue, I have reinstalled windows (factory reset) 5 times since yesterday checking different variations of programs and have found it’s avast.
When I have avast free installed, and my computer sleeps, when it wakes up, it has processor lagspikes (not internet connection).
Also after the sleep/wake up, will not shut down, logs me out then stays on ‘shutting down’ screen.
Please don’t tell me it’s anything else other than avast conflicting with something I have painstakingly tested to make sure before I posted here.
I know you mentioned uninstalling the factory AV but did you run the vendor’s removal tool to delet remnants? as the remnants can conflict with avast, cleanup removal tools for other AV’s can be found here http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
I just factory reset again and am now using no anti virus.
I guess as long as I only stay on trusted sites like this, bbc, ebay etc I won’t need an anti virus. I’ve tried everything else and AVG is useless im not going back to that
Basically as it stands I have a fresh install, removed all the bundled crap and installed all my programs. Running fine when I go into sleep. But if I install avast I will get the same problems.
Don’t want to interrupt your problem solving, but I can validate existence of your symptoms. What you are describing is happening in my system as well (avast! free edition, and Windows 7).
I have not done the extensive resets that you have. But if I do a hard re-boot, start-up in Safe Mode, uninstall avast!, and re-install avast!(pulled down uninstall file, and latest install through another working pc to flash drive, and transferred over to the effected pc) the machine comes back to normal operation…
…Of course I am not implying this is a solution, only further evidence (I think) that your diagnosis of an avast! vs. Windows 7 conflict has merit.
Toshiba laptop (Satellite? Not at keyboard now), Win7 (Home Premium?). Bunch of Toshiba background junk is in there, but it hasn’t been a problem in the past.
Should also mention how recent this issue has appeared. Have been using avast! free for ~9 months now, with no real issues. Makes me think a recent update (either in Windows, or from avast!.. my money is on avast) triggered it. Wish I was observant enough to say exactly when.
I think it has something to do with an update too. Because when I do a fresh install, then install avast before I do updates the problem happens. as soon as I get my pc all up to date the problem happens. Maybe it’s the windows remover tool or something?
