I have been having a big problem with avast! recently. up until version 4.8 all was good. Then I decided to upgrade to v5. Basically what happens is that I can not start my PC anymore. It goes to starting the system, but then before seeing the windows welcome screen I see the dreaded BSOD. I am not even sure what is on it as it dissapears after a second and the PC goes back to booting again.
My short term solution is to start the PC in Safe Mode, uninstall avast! with the uninstall tool, restart the PC (starts normally), and then install avast! again. Pain in the …
I have tried to go back to 4.8 but that does not work anymore.
Hey, thanks for the replies. And to answer your questions. No, I do not any other security software installed. I upgraded avast! when I got the notification about the new verion. I just went through the process, do not remember the details. I have Windows 7 32-bit, not sure what else I could tell you.
Ominimo, your problem is similar but my is not as bad. I remember not being able to boot in safe mode, then I used that Windows recovery option which I get following a failed boot, and rolled back the system. this allowed me to get into the save mode to uninstall avast.
I am really out of ideas. It has become a major pain to uninstall and install every time I want turn my PC on. So work hard
I would, check in Start>Search and search for any previous firewalls or any other Antiviruses your computer may have originally come with also search for Old Avast versions like 4.8 and 5 and delete their folders…Than go to Regedit and go to ‘edit’ ‘find’ and write in (example) ‘Noton’ and click ‘find’ than Norton ‘Find next’ again and again untiit it doesn’t find any registry issues of (Example) Norton… than do the same for say Avast 4.8 …Than I would do a clean install of Avast 6…Also if you do find any reminants of old firewalls or Antiviruses, download their clean up tool, but do the registry check even after them…luck and let me know how it goes…Ohh if you don’t feel safe working with your registry than don’t do this…
No, nothing works. I have tried to go back to version 4.8, which worked originally, but it does not work now. I have never had any other security software on this PC. This problem only appeared when I updated avast! to version 5. A little sad, but may need to find something else.
I’ll listen on for a few more days, so if anyone comes up with an idea, then please let me know.
This has happened to me 3 times and to be honest i don’t actually think it is a problem with Avast. There is a school of thought out there that is has something to do with a recent Windows Update as it has happened to many Windows 7 users who do not use Avast. It could also be Malware from a recent website you have visited. I found this happened to me always after visiting a certain website, which i have now blocked with Avast. Have you been visiting any porn or gambling websites? I was always able to reboot in safe mode but to be honest that doesn’t really do much.
If you want to fix this all i can say is i hope you have made regular backups and saved an ‘image’ of your system because you are going to need it. Reboot and press F8. You should then have a list of options on of which being restore or something along those lines. You can restore from backup there. Don’t bother using last restore point as it probably will not work. You have to restore from a full system backup. Let me know how you get on.
Ahh, yes, there is the Windows 7 update. I can actually remember that there were some Windows updates that occured at same time as the avast! update. I’ll go along this trail as I am not prepared to entertain the thought of having to have to rebuild everything from scratch just yet (Which basically means that I have no backup).
