Windows 8.1 - active interet connection not detected

Hi all,

I’m running Windows 8.1 on a laptop with Microsoft Office 365 (details in my signature).

When running an internet connection via a USB port, e.g. by tethering to a mobile device, Windows does not recognise the connection. I can surf the web and post to this forum, send and receive emails etc, so I am definitely connected right now, but Windows does not seem to know I am connected to the internet. For example, when I place the cursor over the connection icon in the bottom right of the screen, the roll-over message says “Not connected - Connections are available”. When I click on this to open the Network and Sharing Centre window, it shows I actually am connected.

This is a problem because I cannot use some of the functions on Office 365 products (e.g. updating files on OneDrive, and accessing my Microsoft user account in-app) - all products seem to think I am not connected to the internet, even though Outlook lets me send and receive emails.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this? Thanks in advance guys.

does this help?

[Fix] Internet Connection Not Working Using Mobile Phones or USB Modems in Windows

I sort of had the same problem, my computer would say that I wasn’t connected to my wireless Internet although I was. After Googling to find the answer for ages I just gave up and went back to a previous system restore. It fixed the problem. I’m not saying do this, but it did definitely work for me (this was about 4 months ago).

Hi Pondus,
That situation isn’t really the same - in that case the person could not connect to the internet. I actually can connect, and am doing so now to tye this, but Windows and MS Office products do not recognise the connection.

Hi equinox, thanks mate, I don’t want to restore to a previous state but may have to. I’ll see if anyone else has any further suggestions.

Thanks guys,
