I suspect that it might be as long ago as avast 4.8 (and we are now on avast 10.0.2208), even if you were able to find a copy of avast 4.8 on something like filehippo http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/history/4/. This lists the last version of avast 4.8.1368, from November 28, 2009.
Whilst this version still has virus definition updates - it is on life support and the plug could be pulled at any point as avast has been saying for some considerable time.
The other major issue is support - there are very few people on this forum that even used 4.8, much less remember its inner workings.
But ClamAV does http://www.clamwin.com
For realtime protection you need to add Clam Sentinel http://clamsentinel.sourceforge.net
Hi Pondus,
And one should also install the unofficial Turkish service pack 3 for Win98.
To be had here: http://www.htasoft.com/u98sesp/
(mind the note on core options and the use of a browser outside IE)…
Contrary to what everybody held of it we at home (especially my dear wife) liked ME better.
We called that OS “our old tractor”…it stammered, it rattled, it puffed like an old engine at times,
but it never has let us down. We were so lucky with that operational system.
The innocence of carefree computing…
where are those days now with touchscreen and governmental malware?

I am on Windows ME, Avast 4.8 and still receive definition updates. It’s time to renew for 2015 so I’m not positive this will continue.
@PTRPRO: Avast 2015 won’t run on Windows ME here are the system requirements http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB44
Upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8 to take full advantage and awesome features of Avast 2015
Avast 4.8 won’t be able to protect you properly from the latest threats
I have multiple computers with multiple OSs. Just wanted to keep the one with ME going.
Hi PTRPRO,
Wish you good luck,
pol
Latest version (2015.10.0.2208) is working on XP sp3, although some options are not available.
avast will still (according to their promise) keep supporting XP for about another 2 years.
Just renewed 4.8 until 1/1/16. Looks like my WindowsME is “protected” another year. Yes, I know there are many “holes”, but at least I can get up to date virus definitions. Scotty also helps.
There is no way you can be sure of a years protection - whilst the renewal process will always be 12 months - that is no guarantee the virus definition updates will continue. As I have said avast 4.8 has long been on life support awaiting someone at avast throwing the switch.
Hi PTRPRO,
For you it is important to have proper script blocking and third party request blocking in the browser
on that somewhat more risky OS than the later Win OS versions.
So firefox with NoScript and RequestPolicy extensions installed is a must i.m.h.o. against even threats from the future.
I call this the one and only pro-active in-browser protection layer.
Also install Adblock Plus as an additional protective protection layer against malware infested ads.
Stay safe and secure with avast both offline as online, is the wish of
polonus
I would install XP or vista on that system and tweak it for optimal performance.
That way you can use avast 2015.
Hi Eddy,
Does a ME machine have enough room for Vista to manoever?
If he has the possibility I would choose the dual boot Vista/XP option: read here: http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystep_guide.htm
Going back in time ;D

Yo guys, the ME machine is just something I keep going. I have other units with modern OS’s. I like AdBlock+ but find NoScipt too intrusive. I’ve installed KernelEx on the 9X PentiumIII and therefore can run modern browsers up to FF8. It’s a fun box that I would never compromise by risking important data. Just a play-toy for this geek.
Windows 8.1 is much lighter and much more forgiving than Vista. Just make sure your hardware is compatible.
