Windows 98 SE and Avast

Is there something what I should know before I installing Avast! newest version to Windows 98 ?

Not really, but read the avast help file about proxy settings with win98 and the Mail Protection Wizard.

I would also suggest you ensure that you have any windows updates for win98se as soon after installation.

No I haven´t had any updates to win98 SE berofe or after :frowning:
It´s very old PC and it works only with modem.

It doesn’t matter if you connect by dial-up/modem, it is about limiting your vulnerability. If there are any updates available (check) you should install them.

Even if win98 is fully up to date, you won’t be able to install the latest version of Internet Explorer (version 6 SP2), the best you can hope for is 6 SP1 I think. So I would suggest you use an alternative browser such as firefox.

I thought that updating Windows always use internet connection.
Yes IE is updated for SP1 non SP2 (is it available ?) and I´m gonna change that browser for firefox.

Internet connection, dial-up, broadband, cable, it doesn’t matter what type of connection you have, just so long as you can connect to the internet you can use windows update.

The IE6 SP2 update is only available for winXP OS, that is why I said you wouldn’t be able to get it so the increased security of the IE6 SP2 update would mean you are more vulnerable using IE6 SP1.

Yes but it cost lot of money to updating windows with modem I ment

Now I understand correctly  Thanks for your patience !

I’m on dial-up too and the cost of not updating could be even greater in time wasted with potential system unusable due to infection.

Besides the updates for win98 will be few and far between once you have got what is available as win98 is no longer supported. There have however, been a few security updates that have included win98 in the distribution through windows update.

You might want to do check out this thread to improve win98 security.

Yes it make take some time to download, if you know someone with broadband, perhaps they can do you a favour and download it and burn to CD for you.
