After today’s definition updates through windows update, here are some messages I got (see attached screen shots).

I don’t see the issue here? This is normal behaviour for WD when it doesn’t have enough information about the SW. If you still have questions, they belong to MS guys.
If you combine malwarebytes with your avast you can disable defender because it’s detection rate’s are ptetty poor.
Thanks for the responses. It was on by default when Windows was installed and since I could not see much of a performance impact, I had left it running. And it was playing nice alongside avast!, until today when update installed new definitions.
I do have malwarebytes anti-malware, but only the free on-demand.
So what are the general views - disable defender? or leave it running?

Please go to PROFILE then Modify Profile then Forum Profile Information then select your country in Please select your country: then update your Signature: with information like my signature as this helps the helpers offer pertinent advice.
No problem with Windows Defender with its latest update definitions:
Latest definition version: 1.99.176.0
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx
Choose the 64bit definitions.
