Windows Defender still active after Avast install

I’ve been using older version of Avast (~1 year old). I had only antivirus module installed and it had disabled Windows Defender automatically. Now i have updated to the latest Avast version and Windows Defender is regularly showing me definitions updates to install. Usually antivirus programs take over that part of Windows security. Wonder why this time it didn’t. Granted i have tried out Microsoft Security Essentials before installing the newest Avast version, so maybe it changed something on a system. But i have done this also a year ago while testing various antivirus products and WD wasn’t active after Avast install.

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

If you had Microsoft Security Essentials previously installed then once removed Defender will enable itself once again, Avast doesn’t disable Defender on Windows 7 and earlier as it’s only spyware prevention.

Avast Free (11.1.2253 at the moment)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with SP1 (b7601)
Don’t have any other AV or antispyware software installed
Have tried Sophos Home and Microsoft Security Essentials before going back to Avast.

Was using Avast Free 10.0.2208 version before and Windows Defender wasn’t popping up with its updates every other day. That’s why i started wondering. Almost a year ago i went through similar testing (including MSE) and when i have installed 10.0 version of Avast back this issue didn’t occurred, so i thought something has changed in Avast since then. I have always installed only the File shield component in Avast.

P.S. is there a way to get an email notification once you get a reply in this forum?

Yes! by clicking on the “Notify” tab at top and bottom right of page.

Thanks.

For now i have disabled Windows Defender manually in its Options.
