Windows does not boot. Stops at aswRvrt.sys Recover using enclosure?

Hi!

I have a Asus U36SD-RX366V which has been unable to boot the last week. I cant recover or repair using any of the typical windows tools and cant access using safe mode.
It stops at aswRvrt.sys which seems to have haapend to other users to.
I needed to recover some data quickly so I took my cpu apart and put the harddrive in an enclosure and was able to access it. However I only got access to one partition, D:.
Now I would like to recover the computer as well if possible and am wondering if I should try to, in some way, uninstall avast on the harddrive using the enclosure? Or assemble the cpu again to boot using USB?

It seems Essexboy has been very helpful on similar issues before: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=131070.0

Waiting to see if I should assemble or not.

Essexboy is notified… he is usually here after work hours european time…

Thanks! Anything I can do in the meantime?

As you cannot access the drive from another computer that would suggest an MFT failure or something similar as in that state any problem with Avast would still allow you to see the C partition
Can you run a chkdisc from the recovery console on the affected system ?

Hi!

Want to just say that I am a bit of a noob. I know my way aroudncomputers but have never done anything like this before. Not sure how to run chkdsk… Would that be easier to do using the enclosure or after assembling the cpu again?
I ran a few tests on the disk using seagate seatools and found no errors excpet for the short DST test ( which failed to run… Did not tell me why, just that it failed.
I have not yet tried any advanced tests.
The secondary system I am using to acces the drive is a ASUS eee 901 and it has a simplified verison (stock) of WP on it. The faulty system is Windows 7.

I attached an image of my current setup to make everything clear. Assembling the U36SD is quite tedious and I had no luck accessing safe mode previously.
Can I run Checkdisk on the drive using the enclosure?
Also note, both partitions show up in My Computer as E: and F: , however I cant access F: . When I double click and try to open it just loads (windows time glass) and after a while is says disk F: is not formated. Do you want to format? And Iguess I do not want to format? :stuck_out_tongue: Would loose all data right?

Note: The F: partition is what to used to be my C: when the disk was in the U36SD.

Thanks in advance!

As it is reporting not formatted I would suggest that you run chkdsk /r from the recovery console command prompt with the drive back in the original casing

You can create the windows 7 recovery console on a USB if you do not already have it

Hi!

OK thanks! Ill do that?
Do not have a USB. Any links on how to create one?

Yep

Download the following two programmes to your desktop :

  1. Rufus

For 64bit systems
2. Windows 7 64bit RC

For 32bit systems
2. Windows 7 RC

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus
Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.

Press Start Burn

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer. First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

Click repair my computer

Select your operating system

Select Command prompt

At the command prompt type the following :

chkdsk /r

Thank you so much for all your help so far. However now I am stuck :stuck_out_tongue:

Not sure if I did something wrong? To be honest Im not 100% sure the systemm is 64bit But pretty much 99% sure.

Anyway I went into BIOS and made sure the cpu would always boot from USB after burning the image.
Everything finally seemed to work but I am now at an option I am not sur what to do with.
Attached a picture of options
System Recovery options:

Use recovery tools that can help fix problems… etc

or

Restore your computer using image you created

I cant see a operating system which leads me to load drivers and then I dont know what to do.
It access a bunch of folders in X:Windows\System32
Which one should I choose?

Have not dared to do anything yet… :stuck_out_tongue:

OK even the recovery console is not detecting the windows folder. In all probability the MFT or hard drive is history

Oh, ok that sux! But I guess I was expecting that a bit.
But how can the HDD work so well with the enclosure? Was able to save all 300+ GB of Data on the the partition without any problems.
Mostly curious how this stuff works, would love an explanation if you have the time! I dropped the whole cpu maybe a year back…

Given that you seem to have more experience than me, is it a good option to try a Hybrid HDD like the momentus XT, if I have to completley replace it?
Would like the speed but also need more capacity, and +500Gb SSD is too expensive…

THANK you so much for your help! Is there anyway to help support you or your cause?

Hi again,

I realized I have a few images on my desktop (ie the C: partition of my drive). What would be the best way to try to recover them? Can I run some sort of data recovery software on the drive, using the enclosure?

You can use the drive in the enclosure and run a data recovery programme there you could try recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Right, Thanks! Will try that today.

Then with a new harddrive I should be able to save the computer right?
Just install windows on a new disk?

Once again, BIIIG Thanks for all help!

Yep just re-install windows on the new disc

Hi again!

Thanks for all your great help!
Thought this might be interesting to you.

After recovering basically everything from my C-drive with Recuva (Thanks again!!!) I ran a few Hardrive testing softwares. (HD-Tune, Seatools…)
They found a minor error and with HD Sentinel I was able to see that the health of the disc was actually quite high.
So since I hade saved all my data already I reinitialized the disk and was able to “repair” it.

So now I am actually using that same harddrive with a new installation of windows!
Everything is saved!
I will however make sure to keep track of the drive and its health.

Thanks AGAIN!

I think MS should have done a tad more checking before releasing that update as I have a few on another forum where Avast is not the resident AV and it appears to be a delayed effect. It seems to affect only Vista and 7 64bit

Hi again!

New problems!! :frowning: :-\ :-[
Not really sure where to go from here.
So everything that has happend is that I have reinitialized the disk with HD sentinel (as I understand write zeros all over it).
Then formatted it and put it back in the cpu and reinstalled windows using a USB. found ISO file here.
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/14709-Windows-7-Digital-River-direct-links-Multiple-Languages-X86-amp-X64/page60?p=470600&viewfull=1#post470600

I actually messed up and installed the 32bit version first and realized that after trying to install som drivers.
So then I redid everything and windows did a Large amount of udates… around 150. And some of them went wrong but it didnt seem to matter…
Everything went fine I installed some more drivers and actually ran a computer game to test it. I ran HD sentinel again which showed me around 86% health of the disk. So I thought all was good. I did not yet install avast or any other antivirus softwares.
Now today (like 4-5 days later) it (spu) just froze all of a sudden and this new BSOD came up, with code 0x000007A kernel_data_inpage_error.

I tried to reboot only to get into BIOS where the HD was not even recognized… let it sit for a while and rebooted like everything was fine (took a bit longer).
I read a bit about the error and someone said that if the error occurs when the cpu is warm it could be the motherboard failing or a memory error so ran memory diagnostics tool with 2 passes which found zero errors.

Then HD sentinel has now found a few errors and helath has decreased to 78%… Performance is still 100% and expected lifetime above 1000 days.
I have pasted the recomendations below, which seem to indicate something might be wrong with my cables or the HDD. But yesterday I ran a surface test with no bad sectors…?
IF the motherboard or cable is failing I guess I need a totally new cpu…?
But I dont know how to find that out? I am considering buying a new HDD but dont want to do that if the problme lies with the motherboard…
So what would you recommend?? What can I test? CAn I test the cables in some way?

Ps. I am using the computer right now without any problems…

The recomendatons read:
The drive found 7 bad sectors during its self test.
There are 7 weak sectors found on the disk surface. They may be remapped any time in the later use of the disk.
1256 errors occured during data transfer. This may indicate problem of the device or with data/power cables. It is recommended to examine and replace the cables if possible.
At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further.
It is recommended to examine the log of the disk regularly. All new problems found will be logged there.

It is recommended to continuously monitor the hard disk status.

Fitting a new hard drive cable is not something I have done yet. But it should be straight forward

Get a new cable plug one end into the motherboard (in place of the current one) and the other into the HDD … Job done

However, it appears that your hard drive is slowly failing

You have a bad hard drive. Time to replace it.
