I had an avast firewall before with free firewall do i have to purchase 19.19 to get a firewall. I have vista Got the red shield at tray do not have windows firewall running…thx

Anyway vindows firewall is plenty good for home users … if you turn it on 
And at home you are usually also behind a router firewall
Agreed for W7+, the FW in XP/Vista is crap, imo.

Downside however is that most filtering is disabled by default and configuration is not easy (especially not for the average user)
Best firewall to have is a good hardware firewall.
But whichever someone chooses (hardware or software), there is always the need to spend time to learn about it and adjust the settings for the best protection.
Nowadays many firewalls come with presets for all kinds of things like games, Skype and such.
Which is a security risk.
Why should I have the ports open for e.g. Skype when I don’t even have it installed ?
