If you’re like me and miss the ease of use of Outlook Express or Windows Mail from Vista, there is good news. First of all, if you have a Vista machine, you can copy the Windows Mail folder from Vista into Win 7 and it will work, but only if you go from 32 bit to 32 bit or 64 to 64. If that’s not an option, Windows Mail is included in Win 7 but it’s disabled. I found a site that details how to get it working.
I was using Windows Live Mail but I dislike it for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is that it does not combine all of your mail accounts into a single folder structure but gives each one a separate listing and separate inboxes, deleted folders, etc., etc. The second reason is that I absolutely hate the ribbon interface. The reinstated Windows Mail also works perfectly with Avast.
I have been using Windows Mail in Windows 7 since I upgraded from Vista. I much prefer it to Windows Live Mail, and will never understand why Microsoft disabled it. The link that Dch48 posted works perfectly, but I have had some problems installing SP1 in Windows 7 and think that the activated Windows Mail has caused it. Has anyone else using Windows Mail had problems installing SP1?

I can’t say because this computer came with SP1 already installed. My only problem is that SpamFighter will not integrate with the activated Windows Mail. It works fine with Live Mail. Maybe the problem is that I have both mail apps activated with Windows mail as the default. It could also be because the procedure given on the website only works for the 64 bit version of Windows Mail (if you have a 64 bit Win 7) and SpamFighter is a 32 bit application. I don’t get that much spam anyway and I’m experimenting with the junk mail filtering in Windows Mail to see how good that does. I have the spam filters turned off at GMX and Hotmail and I am bypassing the one at Gmail. I could turn them on but then I’d probably have to go to all 3 sites every couple of days to make sure I got everything I should have.
I’ll add something else to this thread since it’s mine ;D. I had always used IESpell as my spell checker but it doesn’t seem to work right in IE9 so I found an alternative that works perfectly. It’s called Speckie, check it out.
