Windows ME no longer supported?

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask, but here goes. I currently have the free version of Avast! 4 installed. I recently got a pop-up message to install the latest version, so I clicked on it. I have a dial-up connection, so it took about 3 1/2 hours to download it. When the download was complete there was no indication that it had worked, but I figured it was probably okay. No such luck. I got the same update message the next day, so I went to the site and downloaded the program so I could install it myself. After another 3 1/2 hours of downloading, when I clicked on the file to install it, I got a message to upgrade my operating system.

I have a ten-year-old computer, with Windows ME operating system. I can’t afford to upgrade to a newer operating system because I’m disabled, which is why I use the free version of Avast! Will Avast! 4 no longer be supported? Since I can’t afford to upgrade to a newer operating system am I going to lose virus protection?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry, but since version 5.0 Windows ME isn’t supported anymore.
Suport for avast 4.x will also end rather soon.

Greetz, Red.

Asyn and Rednose, thanks for your responses. It’s disappointing that Avast! no longer supports Windows ME, especially since I’ve been using it for so many years.

Rednose, I read a review of ClamWin on PC World, and it isn’t good:

According to cnet, AVG supports Windows ME, and it got a good review:

I guess I’ll try AVG.

Thanks, again, for your help.

Well win9.x and winME were meant to be dropped from support at the end of 2009, but effectively got a stay of execution because avast 4.8 was still active.

Avast5 was released in Jan 2010 and win9.x and winME OSes weren’t supported, basically the only reason 4.8 is still supported right now must be down to its use by corporate customers. As the updated versions of avast application versions for corporate customers are released and taken up then support for 4.8 will end.

I think cnet are incorrect as AVG gave up on win9.x and winME on an earlier version I believe, the current AVG11 doesn’t support win9.x or winME, see image.

The real shame is that Microsoft “supported” ME in the first place! ;D

Followed by ME2, a.k.a. Vista ;D

YY4Me,

you can just re-register your existing copy of avast 4.8, and it should continue to work without displaying any popups.

BTW could you please post a screenshot of the popup you’re talking about? It’s actually not supposed to be displayed on Win9x/ME computers (for the obvious reason that v5.x doesn’t support these systems, i.e. the message doesn’t really have any sense).

Thanks
Vlk

;D

And don’t even mention Microsoft BOB! ;D

Huh, you still remember ‘Utopia’… ;D

Vista wasn’t much better for a lot of people especially at the beginning!
