Windows Security Center And Avast4

Hi, I i know i have probably been living in the dark ages, but I am new to forums. Hoping someone can help. I have Avast4 and it has worked fine up until last couple of days. My windows security center comes up on the bottom right of the screen with a red shield and a cross in it everytime I turn on the computer saying it cannot detect any anti-virus software. This comes up under the Malware Protection and says check settings. Any ideas? Cheers Jo

Try installing the new version first; download here

http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

then returns if it continues the problem.

before that, will you please attach a screenshot of your security centre. Because this may also be caused by fake AV.

Sorry took me a while to work out how to save as jpeg. Have attached screenshot. Thanx Jo

I have Avast 4 home edition which came with the computer. If I download the new version am I correct in assuming i am still getting the same protection? Sorry know it is a dumb question but I am always wary of virus’s.

The new version of Avast is more efficient in malware removal. So, no problem about your protection.
But regarding your problem, notification at security center is due to monitoring by a service called Windows Management Instrumentation. Sometimes the information does not update.
Step by Step Procedure for Fixing Problem

  1. Right-click on My Computer

  2. Click on Manage

  3. Click on the plus sign(+) next to Services and Applications in the left-hand column

  4. Click on Services

  5. Find the service called Windows Management Instrumentation, right-click on it, and choose Stop.

  6. Open My Computer

  7. Double-click on Drive C (or whatever drive Windows is installed on)

  8. Double-click on the Windows folder

  9. Double-click on System32

  10. Double-click on WBEM

  11. Right-click on the Repository folder and click Delete and remove it

  12. Close the My Computer windows and return to the Windows services screen using steps 1 - 4 shown above

  13. Find the service called Windows Management Instrumentation, right-click on it, and choose Start. Restarting this service will rebuild the repository folder information.

  14. Restart your computer
Please let us know if the problem is solved.

There is also a program called FixWin from The Windows Club that can do this on vista onwards…save the hassle of doing it manually.

Followed all steps and restarted but message came up again with red sheild ?

So better try FixWin as suggested by spg SCOTT.

IIRC it will need admin rights.

Hi guys…I did the fixwin thing but it didn’t help so I downloaded the new version on Avast and now I get message below. I have hit the update now button but nothing happens? Thanks Jo

Check your system time and date.
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

I don’t know what happened but when I turned comp on today the message didn’t come up. I have checked the security center and it seems fine, as per below. The fairy’s must have visited again. Thank you all for help. It is very much appreciated. I will recommend this site to my friends

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)
