Windows stuck at boot, hangs on aswrvrt.sys in safe boot

Hi,

I have a problem with Windows 7, it just won’t boot up any more. I used the computer on Saturday morning and after using it I did a normal shutdown, after that it won’t boot up any more. When loading normally it gets stuck at the starting Windows screen with the logo. I tried to do a F8 and a safe start, then it hangs on aswRvrt.sys nothing seams to work, not the repair or use last good configuration.
I have read some threads here about the same thing, there was one with a link to an iso and doing a boot usb, but unfortunately the file isn’t available for download anymore. Is there anyone that knows a good way to get past this issue??
I’m in need of your expertise…

I’m running a windows 7 64 bit

I also have to add that I tried booting from an installation disc and running Farbar, but after starting it from the command prompt it just shows up as an empty gray program square with no options or its not running…

Thanks in advance…

Is it FRST that is not working, have you tried a fresh download ? As you have the CD then you will not need the ISO

I just did a new download of frst but the same result, I tried a bootcd Reatogo-x-pe (OTLPENet.exe) that was written about in another thread, there I was able to run frst (but not the 64bit version) and here is the log file, hope it makes sense.

Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that
Then try a normal boot

Done, here is the fixlist, I’m trying a normal boot, but its not looking any different right now, its stuck again at the windows logo saying starting windows.

It’s not starting just stuck at the win logo.

I will disable Avast although I do not believe it is the cause
How many hard drives do you have

Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

I have run the new fixlist, still getting stuck at the windows logo, is there any other program that uses that file?

I have 2 internal hard drives that are partitioned into 3 so totally 6 virtual drives and then I have an extra external usb drive.

Have done a few reboots now with the same result, getting stuck at the windows logo, I would love more pointers if you have any ideas… But I will have to try them tomorrow, because its late and I have to go to bed.

OK disconnect the slave hard drive and then try a reboot

Disconnected the slave drive and it actually booted up into windows, but I’m not able to use my keyboard in the device manager its says that the drivers in the registry are broken. I tried reinstalling them but with no luck. (its a logitech de edge) Did any of the changes we did affect that, i know that the keyboard is ok since I used it yesterday to press F8 and when booting from the cd.
Also what did it have to do with the second hard drive I’ve had it running for years like this. (2 drives 6 partitions)

OK re-install Avast

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe

We did not actually touch any keyboard drivers so it may be a function of the way I disabled Avast

As to why the second drive is a problem I have no idea, it appears to be a quirk with windows, as about 30% of the non-booting cases are resolved by disconnecting the slave drive

I did a reinstall of avast, it went fine. But the keyboard is still not working, its saying that the configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19).

Is it possible that it has something to do with it being a blue-tooth keyboard??

There is that probability is Bluetooth enabled ?

Was it enabled when you re-installed the drivers

Not sure but I think so, since its a usb stick that is inserted and using to connect with the keyboard.

Just tried to do an uninstall of the keyboard driver and then reinstalling it with the usb receiver unplugged but there is no difference.

Have you tried a different USB port ? Also in device manager are there any yellow triangles ?

I did try a bunch of USB ports all with the same result. It’s in the device manager that I see the error message I wrote before about the corrupt registry it’s were there is a yellow triangle for the hid Logitech device… I was thinking of doing a system restore but there are no old restore files available only from after the failure… Is there any other good way to repair the registry…

In device manager I did properties for the Logitech HID and then driver details there are a 5 drivers and 4 of them are provided by Logitech but the one on top is an Avast driver (aswKdb.sys) can this be whats giving me the trouble?

Also I have realized that a few buttons on the keyboard work, like the function buttons and the volume control. but no letters at all.

From device manager right click the entry and select uninstall

Then reboot with the USB plugged in and see if windows detects it. If not re-install the drivers

I did that and it didn’t work, so I uninstalled avast then I uninstalled the drivers from logitech, did a reboot and then the keyboard worked without any drivers, so I installed the logitech drivers again it was still working so after that I installed avast again. Now my computer boots and the keyboard works, that is if the second hard drive is unplugged, if I plug it in it wont boot. So my guess now is that the MBR on that drive is shot, now I just need to figure out how to reset it, it didnt work with a windows boot cd so I think I need to explore other options.
I’m still confused why this happened…?

I have never been able to determine the reason for this, Maybe a chkdsk on the offending drive
