Windows\system32 malicious URL blocked problem

Hello! Perhaps someone can assist me? I have the free version of Avast! Antivirus, and have used it for approximately 2 years on a HP Pavilion laptop, with no problems. I update it regularly, and after updating today, I’ve run into a problem. The antivirus pops up every minute or so, stating ‘malicious URL blocked’ giving the following details:

INFECTION DETAILS:
Object: http:/
Process: C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe
Infection:URL:Mal

The object is generally listed as just http:/…with nothing else following- but sometimes it is also http:/ with a random string of letters or numbers. A scan of the affected file (C:\Windows\system32) with the same software reveals no threats, so I suspect the pop-ups are misfirings. How do I go about correcting this?

Many thanks,
Shawn

so I suspect the pop-ups are misfirings.
naaaa......think you may have a rootkit infection here

follw this guide and attach the logs… not copy and paste. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Adwcleaner
Malwarebytes
OTL
aswMBR

a removal specialist will then check your logs

You do have a zeroaccess rootkit infection as your logs show. Please wait for a malware expert to enter and guide you through cleaning your system.

Avast! knew something was not right, and will continue to prevent further infection if you let it do what is designed to do.

Thanks for the warning Pondus! I’ve removed all Iobit programs. Hope that does the trick!

After these runs could you let me know what the problems are remaining

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Thanks for that essexboy! I’ve followed your instructions and it appears a few infections were found, however, I cannot open any of my programs now, including MS Office, IE, Firefox etc… When I attempt to do so, I receive a message saying ‘Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion’ OR ‘This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel’ in the case of MS programs. I’m writing this from my partners laptop as i cannot use mine at all now. I’ve attached the OTL and Combo log files here. What’s the next step?

Thanks again,
Shawn

Did you reboot yet? Try that if you have not yet done so.

What problems are outstanding ?

Re-starting did the trick. Thanks, mchain. I didn’t think I needed to re-start as the computer had automatically re-booted after running ComboFix. It’s also running noticeably faster and ‘cleaner’ as well. Thanks to all of you for your help!

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
