Windows Update error 8024402F

I am virtually computer illiterate so need to guided through whatever is needed to be done.
My computer is set to automatically do a windows update. This was working quite well until recently when it came up with an error message 8024402F. I went into the help section and clicked on the Troubleshoot problems with installing updates. This took me to Windows Update Troubleshooter. I pressed Fix and Windows Update detects problem then says it has resolved the problem. However, it will still not update and keeps coming up with the error message.

I have Windows 8.1

cbarsden can you please go here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.msg451454 scroll down to the Farbar Recovery and Scan tool ( just below Malwarebytes ) and follow the instructions to download and supply some logs for one of the specialists to look over.
