Been having that problem long before Avast! was install on my computer. Now since you cant Manual “Widows Update” if that the case, have you try to set your computer to automatic update windows itself?. Thats how i have it
marcdupuis, I have avast - and tons of other users - and no trouble with Windows Update.
Can you manually update Windows through http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/
Do you have Windows Home or Professional?
Did you install SP2?
I haven’t been able to connect to Windows Update since yesterday.
Every time I try to connect, it either takes me to the MSN web page, or I get a error page saying:
The resource cannot be found.
Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

I’m using Windows XP Home
Avast version 4.8 Home edition
Sometimes, this means infection…
I suggest:
Hi there I have just completed cleaning someone with exactly the same problem. But the first time round it took four pages of posts and running all the tools in my armoury.
Every time I try to connect, it either takes me to the MSN web page,You may have the latest version of the Zlob virus which infects your router.
If you do have a router let me know and I will give the cleaning instructions, they will be a lot shorter this time around

Thank you for the information guys. I’m going to get to work on this right now.
Yes. I do have a router.
Try this
Please download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
[*]Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
[*]If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
[*]Disconnect your system from the internet
[*]Once the program has loaded, select “Perform Quick Scan”, then click Scan.
[*]The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
[*]Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
[]When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
[]The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
[*]Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.
Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled “reset” located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds). If you don’t know the router’s default password, you can look it up HERE
Re-run MBAM and then connect to the net and try windows update
However, if there are other Zlob-infected machines using the same router, they will need to be cleared with the above steps before resetting the router. Otherwise, the malware will simply go back and change the router’s DNS settings. You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset. Check out this site here for video tutorials on how to properly configure your router’s encryption and security settings. You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using.
Thank you for the information essexboy.
I’m going to get to work on this. There are three computers in the house to clean up that is using the same router.
Please, post back the results.
Using latest Avast on XPx64, I just did a 90mb update via Windows update and it went without any hitch.
I’m still working on it. This is because I need to ask the third person in the house to re-set the router in which he owns.
But anyway, whenever I click on the links that you provided me with, I get an error page saying:
Address Not Found
Firefox can’t find the server at "http.
The browser could not find the host server for the provided address.
* Did you make a mistake when typing the domain? (e.g. "ww.mozilla.org" instead of "www.mozilla.org")
* Are you certain this domain address exists? Its registration may have expired.
* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check your network connection and DNS server settings.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.
Also, the second person in the house only has Windows 98 for his operating system. Will Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware run on his machine?
According to the the Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware website it says:
Operating Systems: Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Vista.
OK I will give a different link for the router password it is on the opendns page and has a link to all routers https://www.opendns.com/smb/start/router/
Win98 I would recommend that you use SAS as it is one of the few that still support it http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
I really do apologize for being away for so long without responding. But the guy who owns the router is so furious at me for even asking him if he could re-set the router that he won’t even talk to me.
So I had to find a work around to the situation.
I had posted my problem on various different message forums all at the same time and eventually one of the tech experts came up with the solution.
What I had to do was circumvent the router by manually changing my IP address and DNS settings.
And now my problem is solved.
But anyway, thank you for all of your help essexboy. Even though I couldn’t do it your way by re-setting the router, I still appreciate all of your help in this matter.
No problem I feel sorry for the guy with the router though as he is wide open to infection. Are you using OpenDNS now ?
Yes. If I understand this right, the computer tech that gave me the new DNS numbers used OpenDNS to get my settings for me.
