Hi today I saw an update at Avast 7 and I installed Avast 8 but there’s a problem. When I restart the computer windows freezes at the progress bar and nothing works anymore. I had to delete avast in safe mode.
I temporaly installed avira because I can’t find the avast 7 and 8 doesn’t work. And I’m pissed! There are other people too who don’t know what to do if such thing happens! That is very bad! Please fix it! I really wan’t to avoid to turn my computer off again to get to the safe mode and delete it again at the new program version. I don’t have time for that. My computer is in a good condition and well if you can’t fix this problem I have to find another antivirus.
Well I actually liked avast very much since 2010 I never had problems with virus anymore. I also had not very much money that time to buy me an antivirus that really protects you from malware.
I of course can buy a Kaspersky or G-Data anyway the best. But I wanted to promote avast! Because it always enough denfence. Just now the version 8 destroyed everything! I have to buy soon a new antivirus and I surely won’t buy a program that doesn’t work!!!
Don’t care really. Hope avast will fix it till Monday!
Exact same issue here, freezing at progress bar, had to uninstall in safemode etc. Running with Avast 7.0.1474 now which thankfully I had downloaded just in case a few weeks ago…
sorry but it seams that actually Avast 8 does not work on vista 64 bits.
i try the proposed solution with or without aswclear.exe … the result is the same : the vista progress bar freeze at reboot.
I thinks that only V7.0.1474 works on vista 64.
but … after using aswclear.exe, it is impossible to return to 7.0.1474 internet suite as this needs an update from the setup i use and after again this is the hell…
I hope that you can give us a real solution for this.
After many tests, it work with avast 8.0.1482 only in free edition.
Every time i try to insert my licence file or try directly an internet suite download, this ends with Vista X64 progressbar freezed at reboot.
Feel free to email me for more informations.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe (see #### below) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all versions).
Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 7.x if previously installed and then for 8.0 once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Ensure that you remove all remnants of avira also:
Uninstall possible remnants of previously installed AVs see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/, this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc.
I just system restored to a week prior and it fixed it, but now it won’t even let me update to version 8. I download it and restart and it stays stuck on 7.
Is the avast standard uninstaller not enough? I already tested it with aswclear.exe and etc. It won’t run on vista 64 bit. Pro, Internet or free it’s all the same.
Is it so hard to test it on any windows version before releasing it? That is not ok! From a fee-based programs I expect a simple uninstall and install. A stable working on systems its writen it supports. But 8 doesn’t do that. Why should I pay for a program that doesn’t work?
What if I was a noob at computers and this would happen to me? It’s poor quality! I always used avast since the version 5 I never had any problems with virus. Also many people took this software with my advice. And now I’m disappointed. It seems avast isn’t serious about its business.
I’m sorry but I have no time for this. I’ll use avast free for some of my computers but surely won’t buy a avast software anymore. From a free antivirus I don’t expect much but if I have to pay for it and it doesn’t work I have a problem!
Lets put it this way if you have a corrupt installation if the regular uninstall isn’t you get to do the whole thing again. It is a bit of belt an braces and hopefully not having to do it again. Not to mention the normal uninstall is dealing with the current installation. My instructions are also being run for the previous version also to ensure there are no remnants there that might get in the way.
The choice is yours.
The beta testing was longer than normal for this and problems were encountered and resolved, the problem is that the permutations of operating systems and installed software is massive and you may not cover every eventuality even in a public beta.
