Windows Vista~ Defragment window wont pop up.

Hello!

I have been trying to defrag my computer and the Admin window comes up but nothing beyond that.
The defragment window does not show up. Can anyone Please help to see if I have a setting off or if something took over?
I recently did a Avast scan and had a Rootkin and 1 in my Malwarebytes. It did do a boot scan and I ran all again… was clean.
I dont know if my defrag was acting up before that, as it is on a Schedule.
And I dont know if it is running … Thats the other part of the problem.
Please help?!

Thanks, Tammy

hi flowerr,

You might want to have a look at this link, as you say you’ve removed some unspecified malware (rootkit) recently: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

You’ll need to download and run these four programs: AdwCleaner, Malwarbytes (you’ve already got that one), OTL, and aswMBR. Why? Because we’re talking about a rootkit, not some generic Trojan or unwanted toolbars.

Attach all four resulting logs in your next reply, and I will then go and notify a certified malware expert.

Along the way, am certain your defragging issue will also be addressed. Could be just a symptom, and not the source of your problem.

Okay Thank you!

I have run all 3 programs and have attached my results.

Could you also run Malwarebytes again? Gone and notified for assistance for you. ;D ;D

Original detection log by MBAM will also help.

Please be patient, may be a bit or so…

[EDIT:] Fixed errors in post.

This may be a broken windows problem so we will check that out

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

THEN

Open an elevated command prompt :

Go Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click command prompt and select “Run As Administrator”
In the black box that opens type the following command and press enter :

sfc /scannow

On completion reboot and try defrag again

Hi!

I have attached the Quick scan for the OTL.

I tried to run the sfc/scannow and it tells me … you must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility.

I also tried to open my defragment again and it doesnt do a darn thing, still. Any other thoughts?

You did right click the command prompt and select run as Administrator ?

Yes I did. But I tried it again and its working. Must have been a tired brain thing. ha!
I will do as follows from the previous response and let you know the results.
Thanks again.

I did the command for my computer and let it reboot. I did try to defragment but it still wont work.

OK next trick is to re-register the defragmenter

Open an elevated command prompt :

Go Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click command prompt and select “Run As Administrator”
In the black box that opens type the following command and press enter after each line :

regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll

On completion reboot and try defrag again

Okay, Thank you.
I tried each command and I nothing. I have attached a screen shot to show you what it says.

Thanks!

OK next option before I hit the registry

Go to C:/windows/inf

Locate the dfrg.inf file
Right click the file and select install
A reboot may be required

okay,

I tried that and I cant find the file you are requesting. I have attached a screen shot… can you see it? Am I in the right area?
Thanks again.

OK go to control panel > folder options
Select the view tab
Select Show hidden files and folders
Then it should be visible

Okay did that.
screen shot to show you. But when I right click, it doesnt give me the option to install.
Am i finding the right one?

Are you looking in this folder C:/windows/inf as that is where the file is

I found the right area but unless I dont know my alphabet, I dont see the dfrg file you are asking for.
Screen shot attached.

It should be there and the lack would suggest it has been deleted at some stage

Could you start an elevated command prompt :

Go Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click command prompt and select “run as administrator”
Then in the black box that opens type :

sfc /scannow

Once this has completed reboot and try again

Okay,
So I did that and did a reboot. Defrag still doesnt show up anywhere. I opened the admin window again and tried a second time…
I added a screen shot of the results. I also tried to find the file it says has errors. Screen shot of that also. There is none in the files I could open.
I tried to open the CBS and CBS. persist file and it tells me I dont have access.

I know you said its possible it was deleted at some point but I dont understand how? I’m the only one on my computer.

I do thank you for all your help.

Could you try this http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/97/1/Error-The-Disk-Defragmenter-is-not-installed-on-your-computer-when-launching-Disk-Defragmenter-in-Windows-Vista.html it will mean editing the registry, if you are not happy doing that I will run a reg fix
