Windows Vista hangs during boot on aswrvrt.sys

I have a Windows Vista that won’t boot. When I try to get into safe mode, it hangs while loading aswrvrt.sys. Normal startup just hangs on a black screen.

I do have another Windows box than I can use for downloads, etc.

I have seen a couple of posts with solutions for Windows 7, so I’m hoping somebody can help me with Vista. Thanks.

Nick

Is it 32 or 64 bit ?

:-[ to be honest, I don’t remember. And it doesn’t boot far enough to tell… Any way I can tell?

OK I can give you both 32 and 64 bit recovery consoles but only one will work. So you may need to burn both and work by trial and error

I will PM the download links for the recovery consoles

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

  1. Rufus

For 64bit systems
2. Windows Vista 64bit RC
3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

For 32bit systems
2. Windows Vista RC
3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus

Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.

Press Start Burn

Then copy FRST to the same USB

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer. First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB

I have attached the file. Thank you for your help so far.

OK boot from the USB and go to the command prompt.

At the prompt type the following and then press enter :

chkdsk c: /r

Once it has completed then try a normal boot

chkdsk did find a few problems. It repaired them, and the system now boots… Wonderful…

Thank you very much.

Nice easy one
