Hi folks,
Last week my Sony Vaio caught the virus listed in the subject line. Avast! saw it, but told me that it was contained and I didn’t need to do anything about it. Haa! Not true! Every few seconds it told me my computer had a fatal error, while it methodically changed all of my files to “hidden”. Ran a full scan with Avast!, but it still didn’t find it. Ran Malwarebytes, which didn’t find it either. Eventually found an online fix to remove the exe files involved and unhide my folder names, but my Windows XP is not functioning properly: my Start menu can’t see the now unhidden file names, nor can it see the Program file names. Tried something called XP Repair Pro, which found over 500 “deep” errors, but it won’t fix them unless I pay for the software.
Any one have any ideas for me?
Thanx,
Anne
welcome to the forum annekk.
do a scan with OTL and post the result here.
Download OTL to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
