Windows XP SP3 to include some Vista features

October 09, 2007 (Computerworld) A Web site that leaked details of Windows XP Service Pack 3 over the weekend claimed that the update includes several new features, including some borrowed from Windows Vista.

According to NeoSmart Technologies, Windows XP SP3 build 3205, which was released to beta testers on Sunday, includes four new features among the 1,000-plus individual hot fixes and patches that have been issued since XP2’s debut three years ago.

Features backported from Vista, said NeoSmart, include Network Access Protection (NAP), an enterprise policy enforcement technology that inspects client PCs before they access a corporate network, then updates the machines if necessary or blocks them if they don’t meet specified security criteria.

Other additions range from a kernel module containing several encryption algorithms that can be accessed by third-party developers, to a new Windows activation model that doesn’t require users to enter a product key.
Microsoft had previously announced SP3 support for NAP, which is part of Windows Vista and will be included in the not-yet-finalized Windows Server 2008.

Windows XP SP3, which Microsoft has said will be released early in 2008, will be one more move by the developer to extend the lifespan of the six-year-old operating system. Last month, for example, Microsoft gave Windows XP a five-month reprieve by pushing back the end of retail sales and sales of XP-powered PCs by large resellers to June 30, 2008.

And last week, Microsoft debuted a new “get-legal” program that lets companies purchase large quantities of Windows XP Professional licenses through their usual resellers.

Microsoft was not immediately available for comment on the leak, or the new features touted by NeoSmart.

Whats new in SP3 (01. September 2007) Beta release:

»Descriptive Security Options UI Security
The Security Options control panel in Windows XP Service Pack 3 now has more descriptive text to explain the settings and prevent incorrect configuration of settings.

»Enhanced security for Administrator and Service policy entries Security
In System Center Essentials for Windows XP Service Pack 3, Administrators and Service entries will be present by default on any new instance of policy. Additionally, the UI for the “Impersonate Client After Authentication” user right will not be able to remove these settings.

»“Black Hole Router” Detection Networking
Windows XP Service Pack 3 includes improvements to black hole router detection (i.e., detecting routers that are silently discarding packets), and turns it on by default.

»Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module Security
Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module (FIPS.SYS) is a FIPS 140-1 Level 1 compliant, general-purpose, software-based, cryptographic module residing at the Kernel Mode level of the Windows Operating System. It runs as a kernel mode export driver (a kernel-mode DLL) and encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms in an easy-to-use cryptographic module accessible by other kernel mode drivers. It can be linked into other kernel mode services to permit the use of FIPS 140-1 Level 1 compliant cryptography.

»Network Access Protection Networking
NAP is a policy enforcement platform built into Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 (now in beta testing), and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (which includes the NAP Client for Windows XP, now in beta testing) that allows you to better protect network assets by enforcing compliance with system health requirements. With NAP, you can create customized health policies to validate computer health before allowing access or communication, automatically update compliant computers to ensure ongoing compliance, and optionally confine noncompliant computers to a restricted network until they become compliant.

»Windows Product Activation Setup
As in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, and Windows Vista, the user may now complete setup without having to provide their product key. They will be prompted for the product key as part of Genuine Advantage during subsequent use.

God I hope it doesn’t have too many Vista features, especially any of the ones that brought systems to a crawl like slow file transfer, or any of the other things that upset so many people… ;D ;D

Unbelievable ! ;D ;D Those were exactly my thoughts when I saw all this… They don’t want to ruin XP too, they may not know that at this point, but I am sure they don’t want to ruin XP :-X

I sure hope they don’t screw up XP in the process, or perhaps that wouldn’t be a bad idea from their point of view, it would sure make people thing I might as well be on vista. Or am I too much of a sceptic when it comes to M$ business practices ???

I for one, sure have no clue what to think anymore. I lost my faith in MS when I got my Vista laptop. I don’t have anything against them or Mr.Bill Gates for that matter. I will always respect him for everything he did for computer World. Sure he wasn’t Angel always, but we all must admit he is a visionary and he is a genius, there is no doubt about it. Best of all, when I’ve heard how much money he and his lovely wife gave to charities and to hungry people all around the World, it gives you a lot different picture than what most people are trying to present him as. I don’t know, but I respect him…

Business side of all this looks completely different… Windows OS went down after releasing Vista, that’s for sure. So many problems, such a slow respond to fixing them and many many other things… maybe Microsoft needs one huge “cleaning” inside, someone must be responsible for all this mess.

In the mean time, people are searching for some other solutions… so many already completely switched to Linux even though it’s totally not user-friendly (still, no matter what others say)… so many people left Windows world for good, partly I was one of them when I bought my iMac. I still use best of both worlds, but Windows future doesn’t look that bright anymore…

Already criticizing SP3 guys ? That was fast ! ;D

No seriously XP is fine the way it is IMO and doesn’t need any new features. I hope MS stops wasting their time with adding new stuff to XP and focus on fixing Vista. That should be their main priority.

They probably use Vista themselves that would be why their productivity is so low. ;D

I must be the only one happy Vista user here 8)

No you’re not the only one ;D . I’m also happy with my Vista. Great OS.

I have Vista Ultimate on a desktop and a laptop and I also don’t have any complaints.
Like anything new, it takes a little while to get used to the changes.

:o Getting a little bit afraid over here.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I too hope they don’t send XP into a tailspin.

Make that two ;D

Vista works good if you do your normal everyday computer use… but when it comes to getting your serious work done, Vista sucks big time. I can assure you people, it doesn’t work properly and no one can say different. Just a simple test… try to copy some large number of files over your home network and you’ll see what I’m talking about… It is well known fact that Vista doesn’t do that properly, even giving the approximation on how long it will take to copy those files is everything but correct information… not to mention working simultaneously in Photoshop, Fireworks and Flash.

Take a look in here and you’ll see that I am not talking bull… Vista has such a huge error it’s silly…

Oct. 6th 2007 ...As announced this week, the first beta build of SP1 (6001.16659) has been released on Microsoft Connect. The initial reaction from most tester has been largely positive noting improvements in file operations such as moving, copying and deleting files.

Proving that something is really wrong with this simple operation:

http://www.istartedsomething.com/20070928/vista-file-copy-sp1-comparison

So Tech and RejZoR, you guys maybe got some good version that doesn’t have this problem ? I don’t think so… or you maybe have some connections in Microsoft and you got these things without errors… ;D ;D ;D

I’ll use VIista when:

  • Someone gimme 800-1000€ to spend in a new PC, and 100€ for Vista OS disk.
My old IP 4 3.0 with 2 MB RAM can’t run Vista and .
And i’ve got two very old games (NFS:HS and NFS: P2000) don’t run in VIsta, and i play a couple o runs every day, lol. Well and others old programs
I am teacher, i use Word and Power Point, and with my PC i’ve got all i need.
And i read Vista have got problems with permissions and AV’s and others programs.
I’m very idiot, 6 years fighting with XP, and when i’m winning, a new competitor,no no.
When i work there is a PC with Vista and an older with XP. I always use Xp,hehe.

I’m running Vista fine, although it does take a huge amount of RAM, which is why I just ordered an upgrade so I will soon have 2 GB in my desktop.

I’m running Vista on 2Gb of RAM memory and it doesn’t help when it comes to these issues… Vista definitely needs those patches and it needs them ASAP. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be so many people out there complaining about exactly same things… :-\

Same Here, No problems.

I will always respect him for everything he did for computer World. Sure he wasn't Angel always, but we all must admit he is a visionary and he is a genius, there is no doubt about it.
::) Sure a real visionary and Genius Tell that to The Apple and Open Source Developers who have had their work stolen by his company.

I’m sorry to say this, but you’re wrong there Kyle… Where is the proof that he was the “executor” in that case. Microsoft has thousands and thousands of employees. I am 110% sure he is not being asked for every single question they have…

Apple people are not saints either and everybody knows that. Just take a look at that case where woman bought an iPod for her daughter and when she got home, they opened this box, and instead of an iPod, they found a bunch of rocks inside… they went back to the store and they wouldn’t give them money back, because they thought they planted those rocks themselves (that’s why I record every box opening with my camcorder, of course only when it comes to some big purchases like iMac or similar) So, woman decided to buy another one because she wanted to give his girl a present. She asked that salesman if they can open that box before they pay for it… he said there is no way they can do that, they have to pay first and then they can do whatever they want with the product… so they actually paid for a new one. Opened that box in front of the salesman, and voila… you’re guessing right… rocks again!

It looks like someone in distribution center was pocketing those iPods and planting rocks inside boxes instead…

Ok, this is completely different story - but should we blame Steve Jobs for not doing anything to stop actions like this ? Of course not, we should anyway blame him for a lot of other things, that’s for sure. But my point is, he has no clue what’s happening in all those little distribution centers around the World… BTW, this was in USA

Not saying that these issues do not exist, but for my uses Vista has been fine so far, however you’re correct these issues do need to be fixed ASAP.

People are crying how Vista sucks but honestly i’ve never used so stable OS from beginning. Sure there are minor issues but none are as big as they were before. Only i could even find so far is very slow transfer rate from external devices (USB keys and mostly from card readers and digital cameras). Other than this, there isn’t really any problems.
