I’ve mentioned that fact about 1 year ago. The compatibility mode in Windows 8 is excellent.

Start menu” on Lenovo Windows 8 PCs will nag you to install apps
I’ll obviously avoid that brand! >:(

Yes but the real kicker was the discovery of a utility that modifies the latest AMD video driver to work with my 2005 legacy card. Previous to that my only option in Win8 was the driver provided by HP which is from 2006 and has problems even with games from that time. This has nothing to with Win8’s compatibility mode which I agree is better than in previous Windows versions.

Pokki is actually quite good. I’ve used it before and I’m sure many of the less-savvy computer users will enjoy it.

Microsoft reverses course; releases Windows 8.1 RTM to developers.
Nice to see that enough voices have persuaded the powers that be to listen to reason.
(I’m busy downloading from TechNet now. )

It’s also going to be on Acer PC’s. This is a quote from the article

it "doesn't strive to mimic any particular version of the Windows Start menu, and as such it's not plagued with the same dashed hopes and shattered expectations as Classic Shell,"
I wasn't aware there were any "dashed hopes and shattered expectations", Classic Shell works very well and now with the Windows 7 skin, it looks and works exactly like Win7.

During my recent visit to the APCUG Digital Technology Conference in Dayton, OH
I attended a presentation held by Keith Mayer and asked him what happened to the
Image Backup in Windows 8.1. Today he sent me the answer:
Backup and Recovery of Windows 8 & Windows 8.1 - Tip-of-the-Day

I guess you can consider this a fringe benefit of doing the presentations for Avast.
I not only do Presentations but also have the opportunity to attend and learn.

ClassicShell v4.0 has been released.
Gives you back the Start Button in Windows 8 and replaces the unfulfilled promise in 8.1

Classic Shell™ is free software that improves your productivity, enhances the usability
of Windows and empowers you to use the computer the way you like it. The main features are:
Highly customizable start menu with multiple styles and skins
Quick access to recent, frequently-used, or pinned programs
Find programs, settings, files and documents
Start button for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
Toolbar and status bar for Windows Explorer
Caption and status bar for Internet Explorer

Has come some distance since I first installed it a year ago.

Yes and IMHO, it’s still the best free actual Start Button replacement for Windows 8 and 8.1

I would have to agree.

+2

I am not a windows 8 user yet (Hope to be one after Christmas though ;D) but i am wondering this right now… If you don’t make a windows 8 local account and just use a MS Account to login… Does if you were to go for say on another computer go to your MS account outlook and change the password… Would that also change the windows 8 login? I’m just wondering as because i wouldn’t want my outlook to get hacked and lose access to my future windows 8.1 machine… Just a bit worried because my e-mails have been hacked about 3 times this year :-[

On your computer, it’s your sign on password.
If it’s also you MS account password than it will also sign you into your MS account at the same time.
If you change your MS account Password, then you’ll have one for your computer and one for your MS account.

I think that’s right but then I have my Win 8 machine set to skip the password entry and boot straight to the desktop. I have never used a Windows password.

Wait. Dch48 its possible to skip and not use a windows password with an Microsoft account on windows 8, or is that only possible with local account? I have never used a windows password either…

Bypassing the password screen is different from not entering a password or,
the relationship between your Microsoft account and the password used when you sign into windows.
Now you should be totally confused.

You have to set a password but you can then tell Windows 8 to log you in automatically without having to enter it every time.

Go to the modern start screen and type netplwiz once the box is shown open it and untick the option to sign in and you’ll never have to sign in again
