So far I have not been able to complete the upgrade download from Windows Store.
Seems to loose data flow (or something) and start over from the beginning. Just got as far as 51% complete and then slipped back to beginning :-[
Man :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: Wireless connection

schmidthouse have you tried using your original DNS settings from your ISP ? OpenDNS could be interrupting the flow or blocking the return of some of the data.

At 51% I think the download part has completed and then it switches to gathering data if I remember correctly.

LOL never even thought about that.
Well things just seem slower these days ;D ;D

It’s just a thought so hopefully it works for you :-\

I updated late last night and it was something of a disaster. First off it took at least 2 hours to complete and then I found a few things broken. Classic Shell had to be completely reinstalled, Comodo wouldn’t load and also had to be reinstalled, my video driver also had to be reinstalled since it reverted back to the generic one that only supports 1024X768 resolution. My settings to skip the password on login also had to be redone. Then I had to remove the windows.old folder again to regain almost 6gb of space and do a boot defrag with Puran because my registry was now in 45 pieces and the drive was heavily fragmented. I also had to turn off the Enhanced Protection Mode in IE11 to get Flash and Java to work. I think everything is working right now but it took at least 5 hours to get it that way. The performance is no better than it was and the new features, for the most part, will never be used. I’m thinking I should have skipped it.

One thing I did discover is that the need for Classic Shell is almost eliminated. The new Start button does not only take you to the “Metro Screen” but if you right click it, gives a multitude of shortcuts to things like Control Panel, Device Manager, Command Prompt, My PC settings, shut down, and many more things. If you also add the Desktop Toolbar to the Task Bar, you have access to almost all of the Start Menu. All your programs are listed and accessible as well as other settings. The only thing I was missing was my browser favorites and the only reason I felt a need for Classic Shell was to get them back since IE is my default browser. If you use something else, the favorites access won’t be missed since it only works with the ones stored by IE.

Lovely.
For me, I can’t get the free Upgrade downloaded for windows store. Keeps starting over.
Reached as high as 50% and then just keeps starting over (And not from where it left off) and going back to 0%
Don’t understand why It keeps going back to 0 :-[ :-[
Only Internet access is Wireless connections.
Been trying for 2 days

I also had a very painful experience upgrading, first off the upgrade takes way too long. On my machine it took about an hour for everything to complete, that is on a modern quad core system with an SSD drive, 8Gb of RAM and a 100mbps optic fibre internet connection. As i said way too long, Win 8 install took just a few minutes in comparison. But ok i am patient so that was not so much of an issue for me.

The real issues were some of my programs had to be reinstalled and also some drivers(soundcard, intel RST,steering wheel drivers etc.). Also some of my custom windows settings had to be re-applied. And to top it all off, every time i restarted i received a BSOD which was a real pain trying to diagnose and solve(took a few hours).

Damn, all that work and for what ? A Start button ? Cause that is the only useful new feature for me, everything else is basically the same as on 8 and i don’t care about Metro Apps as i don’t use them with the only exception being the Mail app.

Also what happened to the Libraries ??!

Dch48 i agree with you, could have skipped this upgrade. Infact i am thinking about restoring back to 8(i did a fresh backup before upgrading).

Anyone noticed this ?

All you're seeing is what has always been available by using the Windows Key and the X Key. (That by the way is still available in 8.1) It certainly isn't a start button. If you had been using the latest version of Classic Shell before the conversion, you wouldn't have had any problems after conversion. Drivers should also be updated before conversion where ever possible. I could give you an easy program to use but, since most of you will not use anything from IObits, I will not mention DriverBooster (Free).

How to Download Windows 8.1 RTM Standalone Offline ISO for Clean Installation?

Bob, I was and am using the very latest 4.0 version of Classic Shell and after the upgrade it wouldn’t load at all. It had to be reinstalled just like my video driver (which can not be updated past it’s present state, I have to use legacy drivers and I will never use any kind of driver updating program. They can’t be trusted) and Comodo. It has been discovered that the upgrade destroys some of the Comodo registry entries and prevents it from loading correctly. I suspect it messes up others as well. Everywhere I look the prevailing opinion is that the upgrading is a complete fiasco.

I brought up the right click of the new Start button because it isn’t even mentioned in most of the reviews of Win 8.1. All they say is that it only takes you to the tile (Metro) screen which is not accurate. It is not the true Start button we’re all used to but it’s better than not having one at all. I also never use keyboard shortcuts so I wouldn’t know about the win-x thing.

@Dch48,
Since I use avast! to protect my computer not Comodo Security as you apparently do,
I had no problems updating to Windows 8.1 and am right now in the process of updating my Dell Mini
through the link I posted in my original Win. 8.1 post. (Through the Windows Store)
I have no clue what Comodo does or doesn’t do when you update to Wind. 8.1 and personally don’t care.

People using Avast are also having big problems and having to reinstall. Read the other threads about it.

I did the upgrade through the Windows Store as well.

Dch48 it’s not avast causing update issues as I’ve completed my third system update now, two of them with avast and Outpost firewall and one with Outpost Security suite and not one problem on any of them, once I get my bandwidth renewed I’ve still got another two to do ::slight_smile:

On going for me. Still no success getting the 8.1 Upgrade to succeed.
Last attempt, the process actually showed the stage change from ‘downloading’ to “Installing”.
About 30 seconds after the change to “Installing” the whole process started over and went back to Downloading 0% :o
Have no I idea what the issue is,

I had a false positive which is already solved while downloading the Update, i had to restore the file from the chest.

schmidthouse the next thing I might try would be to refresh your system back to when you first installed 8 and then do the update from the store ( but that would mean reinstalling all programs :frowning: ) “or” download the iso from the link in Bobs post earlier and install offline and that should work.

Thanks Craig, appreciate the time. Mmm a Refresh, have definitely considered that as deferred option at this point, but definitely doable. :stuck_out_tongue:
Yes I saw Bobs link. That’s an RTM so will that cause a validation/registration issues down the road as that would be, shall we say, not the typical way to get the 8.1 upgrade?

Edit: Refresh it is.

A quote from Ivo, the author of Classic Shell after I posted in their forum that the 8.1 upgrade broke the program.

Yes, this is a known limitation: http://www.classicshell.net/faq/#general_win81

The problem is that the upgrade wipes out the registry where Classic Shell is installed. So after the upgrade Classic Shell doesn’t have the opportunity to run and repair itself.
One possible solution is to install a service on Windows 8, whose only job is to detect when the upgrade happens. But that’s an overkill.

And from their FAQ,
If you upgrade Windows from 8 to 8.1 with the option to preserve the programs, the start menu will not automatically run after boot. You will need to re-run the installer of Classic Shell and choose the “Repair” option.

@David,
If you’re updating your Dell Mini, you’ll again need to fix the display problem.
I just had to follow my own tutorial and now have it set for 1024X768 which took care of the Apps not loading problem.
