WinXP machines corrupted after newest Avast update on 23 Oct 2013.

My WinXP computer is locked up due to the newest Avast update and they want to charge $179.00 to fix the problem they caused. You can read about it if you search “fssfltr_tdi.sys avast”. There are hundreds of users whose computers are locked up and Avast says that it is just a coincidence. The computers effected try to start up but are stuck in an endless loop and will momentarily flash a blue error message that blames the above listed file. The only way to start the computer in safe mode, but no one seems to have a fix yet. I am so glad to have my ipad right now or I would be unable to post this. Check it out before you recommend Avast to a friend.

That file is the microsoft family filter from safe mode disable/uninstall http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-live/family-safety-remove-uninstall-faq

The file fssfltr_tdi.sys is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Known file sizes on Windows 7/XP are 54,760 bytes (39% of all occurrences), 55,152 bytes, 54,752 bytes or 55,136 bytes. The driver can be started or stopped from Services in the Control Panel.

Avast has nothing to do with it. It is a Microsoft problem. And ofcourse avast will charge you if you want them to solve it.
Let’s say if you buy a Ford and go to a Fiat dealer if you have a problem, they will charge you because they have nothing to do with it.

Next time search for fix fssfltr_tdi.sys error or something like that.

Thanks all for trying to help.

Essexboy, the only way to get the computer to boot up requires it to be in safe mode and that mode will not let me delete that idiotic Microsoft file.

Eddie, everyone’s computers were working fine until the newest avast update was installed and the computers asked us for permission to restart. At that point, my computer shut down and then it tried to restart but is stuck in an endless loop.

So I drive my Ford to the Fiat dealer and they install a part on it, then when I try to start it up to drive home, it will not start. The Fiat dealer says that they had nothing to do with it, but they will be happy to fix the problem for a large fee. It is no wonder Fiat closed its doors in the US back in the 80’s. I hope the Fiat 500 does better. Not so sure about Avast.

I totaly disagree with your responce “Eddy” on “fssfltr_tdi.sys” this flie is on many Windows systems and Avast should have seen this issue during alpha testing. For Avast to release Avast 2014/v9.0 in it’s form and corrupt who knows how many systems is almost a crime. They should be bending over backwards to help people that can’t even start there systems in Safe Mode.

This issue is not by any means a Microsoft Problem with “fssfltr_tdi.sys” !!!

Even if it were then Avast’s installer should of been checking to see if the file exist’s and stop the install with a message to this effect.

Most of the people effected can’t even F8 and enter Safe Mode when this occurs !!!

Thanks Hookster. Makes me feel a little less alone.

You don’t have to delete that file, just disable the service from running.
Follow the instructions on one of the 15k+ links that are explaining how to do it.

You are so wrong with the Ford/Fiat thing which I only gave as example.
If the Fiat dealer don’t fix the problem but do change/replace things, you don’t have to pay them.
And a honest dealer will not charge you anything.
The same is with avast, you only have to pay them if they solved the problem.
If they can’t/won’t for whatever reason, you won’t have to pay them.

So in this case the problem is caused by Microsoft software, that means you should contact them and ask them to solve it.

No thanks necessary “coolpoints” your far far from alone on this issue you can take that to the bank !!!

Yes it is on many Windows systems, but that is not the problem. The problem is the running service.

avast alpha/beta was tested on over 200k systems and none had a problem with it or it would have been reported and fixed before the final release.

Most of the people effected can't even F8 and enter Safe Mode when this occurs !!!
Proove it. coolpoints says he can and (sofar) I haven't seen anyone mentioning he/she can't.

ORLY? It gets loaded before bootloader? Amuse us a bit more. ;D

Seriously, people, if you want to get a problem fixed, then shove the unproductive rants to where the sun does not shine and try to follow the free advice provided by others here, and produce some effort yourself (like, GFGI). Otherwise, you have no other option than go pay somone else for fixing the issue if you are unwilling to produce any effort on your own. Avast did not install the MS family safety junk on your computer.

How is this Microsoft’s problem? Their software was working fine. I did not know it was there, never used it, and don’t even believe that my computer should have parental controls installed. Never the less, it did not cause any problems until the newest avast update screwed things up.

I have tried numerous sites and they seem quite happy for me buy some service they offer that they claim will fix the problem.

I just want to get back to basic email and iTunes operations on my little net book.

Hate to restate the obvious, but - continuing this mud slinging nonsense will NOT get your problem fixed. You need to boot to safe mode and disable the service. (After that, it can be uninstalled after normal boot.) So, either state which part of process you are having trouble with, or… no need to post at all.

What in the Heck are you saying “Eddy” ? I had 3 systems that would not boot even in Safe Mode I ended up using Hiren’s Boot CD in order to fix this issue by deleting “aswRvrt.sys” in System32\ . All 3 of these systems would not boot even in Safe Mode !!!

Once I deleted the effected Avast files in System32 I was able to boot normally in Win-XP and uninstall Avast v9 from Add Remove Programs first then booted to Safe Mode and ran Avastclear.

So there’s my Proof for you “Eddy”, and you damned well know my systems are not the only ones that have had this issue, read these forums you’ll see many others.

Ok. I welcome your offer. I know how to delete a program, but that does not work in safe mode. I, however, do not know how to disable a program that I have never enabled in the first place.

After you booted to safe mode:

CoolPoint if you have another system D/L a copy of Hiren’s Boot CD and run Mini-XP off it at boot. You’ll be able to access your local HD and browse to your Windows\System32 folder and either rename “aswRvrt.sys” or delete it, that was the file on my systems that would stop at when trying to boot in Safe Mode, I was able to get a normal boot after removing it.

However I saw a few other messages in the forums were some other folks were also having to delete the Avast Self Protection file to. I didn’t have to pluck that one on any of my 3 systems.

The guy has already stated (multiple times) that he has NO PROBLEM with booting into safe mode. So please… the above advise is completely irrelevant and in fact does more harm than good, as it will damage the Avast install.

I did not know it was there, never used it, and don't even believe that my computer should have parental controls installed.
If you want to use it or not is ofcourse your own choice. Fact is, it is there. Fact is also you never looked at the many sites that tell you how to disable the service for free, including many pages on the Microsoft website.

Roger Dodger, Guess he’s a lucky one being to be able to boot to Safe Mode.

But the folks that cannot will need an alternate boot method such as what solved my issue with Avast v9.

I really appreciate all the help. I disabled the family filter bullshit. It was set to manual and I switched it to disabled, but my computer will still not start up in normal mode.

It is past midnight in Iraq and I have got to get to bed. I will try again tomorrow.

Got to be back at work in 5 hours.
