W7 install here, no problems with the update what so ever.
Although,
I do uninstall (uninstaller) from the Admin account, then INSTALL the new version.
I’ve been bitten by avast’s program updates 1 to many times, I now do it the long way and don’t have it set to ‘Auto Update’ the Program, only the engine and Virus Definitions.
I now do this with all my security programs, avast, MBAM Pro and Online Armor Firewall.
Otherwise, I’ve been really happy with avast!

Since I do not have it, I do not understand when you said you disabled it. However I asked both members in the Spanish Forum to uninstall just Family Fafety since Windows essentials have other features and it worked, Windows XP did not BSOD.
Then you have to reinstall avast! 2014. I said this because in both cases this members went back to avast! 8 to be able to enter Windows and uninstall Family Safety.
On start up, I got a warning exclamation mark in the Avast icon. when I clicked on it, it said I was unprotected. So I clicked on fix. Avast extracted files and data and said " re- start" so I did. when the log in screen come up, I didn’t get chance to sign in, it just kept closing down ( like the above post ) It done this about 6/7 times then I pulled the plug. same thing after re-boot. so I done a safe mode start up. I rolled back to an earlier start date. I clicked on Avast to see what the warning was. It said My subscription had run out ?? not much notice there then.I used the avast UN-installer to remove avast as I couldn’t afford to pay. I installed the free one instead. there was loads of logs in the mini dump, but have since vanished ?? I’m not that good with a comp. so not sure what damage has been done. or if I should remove avast altogether now ? running windows XP
I have Windows Pro 64 bit Home premium installed. After upgrading to the latest Avast version, I incurred a variety of problems. Screen display sideways, System Restore unworkable, mouse/cursor disconnect, Avast stating subscription has run out ( it has not ), Chrome browser display corrupted, I>E> 11 corrupted, SafeZone would not open, and so forth. I was not locked out of safe mode and I was able to reboot into safe mode and use the avast uninstall utility. After a clean reinstall, the computer was back to normal and all worked properly,
including AVAST. Later on, I received an e-mail from Avast stating that they “had problems” with the latest upgrade and were working on solutions. Obviously I had no problem with “family/parental guidance” files locking up the computer, I am glad to say.
