I’m running avast8 free on Windows XP proffesional w/ SP3.
In the past week, ever since I let avast to make the update to version 8 (and this includes todays update), my OS has been running slowly at startup. After loging on, it takes approximatly 4 minutes for system to become fully operational. When the it was running Avast7, this process took about 45 seeconds.
Is this a bug or is an avast component responsible for this ‘feature’ (if so: how can I disable it)?
And another thing: how can I permanently disable the ‘programe updater’ feature? This feature installed itself at program update from versin 7 to version 8 without my approval and it seems to ignore the fact, that it’s functions concerning any update processes have been disabled in the setttings. And yet it starts on its own every day after the system boots, forcing me to stop it manually. Is this another bug or is my version of avast compromised?
To uninstall any modules of avast you only have to start the uninstall of avast, once you receive the popup screen choose change and then you’ll be able to remove unwanted features.
I agree that Program Updater was a pain, no permission to install asked during update to v8 from v7, and impossible to disable permanently within the avast GUI. I had to come here, do a search, find this thread, then do a “change” uninstall as suggested above.
Setting avast services to load last with v8 did not improve my boot time. It’s still about the same as with v7. It seems too slow, although I haven’t timed it with a stopwatch. ZoneAlarm always loads last, which takes the longest, and may be the culprit.
Overall v8 isn’t as big of a PITA to tweak compared to v7, which took a big effort. The same tweaks from v7 work in v8, such as how to disable the Emergency Update Service.
I had this problem. I solved it by running aswclear.exe (make sure you have the latest version of aswclear.exe) in safe mode then doing a clean install of Avast!
