With SP2 Avast unables setup of older software

Hmm, really interesting… Maybe Apache (our HTTP server) somehow thinks that .reg files are audio streams - and IE agrees… ;D

Anyway, here’s a zipped version - works OK:

http://www2.asw.cz/~vlk/vdd2.zip

Cheers
Vlk

FYI:

It’s not only IE, Opera does the same. Both change the fileextension to .mp3

Firefox however thinks it is a quicktime movie ;D and leaves the fileextension .reg

Hope this little info helps finding/solving the problem.

Thats because server reports wrong MIME type :stuck_out_tongue:

Something like this?

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers]
“VDD”=“C:\Program Files\avast!\aswMonVd.dll”

No, because that would create the VDD value of type REG_SZ which is not correct (it must be REG_MULTI_SZ).

I don’t recommend experimenting with this stuff…

OK, When I need, I will install it with the default folder…

Thanks

You don’t have to reinstall. Just change (edit) the thing in regedit instead of editing the .reg file and importing it…

I will do that

On my old PC, I have installed the avast! Home Edition on WinXP Pro SP2, and see that the registry already have the:

“VDD”=“C:\Program Files\avast!\aswMonVd.dll”

Is this normal?

Why are you asking? Of course it’s normal. As I said, by far not all SP2 users are affected by this strange behavior…

I didn’t saw that…

I instaled the avast! Home Edition to my friend, and now he doesn’t have that problem

Thanks

The only places I have encountered this problem is when installing applications using older versions of Installshield. This includes recent updates to some of my programs, but since applications don’t seem to use old versions of this installer, it probably only affects a few people with apps using these installers.

Hopefully this will help someone who hasn’t installed Avast in the default location. I have attached a registry files that will fix the problems for the following location you might have installed Avast :-

c:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\

Change the file extension from .txt to .reg before double-clicking the file.

I suggest checking it looks OK in a text editor and of course use at your own risk. If it doesn’t work, you can always edit the registry manually as suggested above.

I will post for other locations below (don’t think I can attach more than one file).

If you have installed Avast in
d:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\

… use this one (attached).

If you have installed Avast in
e:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\

… use this one (attached).

If you have installed Avast in
f:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\

… use this one (attached).

And which one to use if I have Avast installed in:

x:\IamnotgonnatellwhereIinstalled it?

Just kidding ;D ;D ;D

Nice job, I think you helped a lot of people.

If you have installed Avast in
g:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\

… use this one (attached).

If you have installed Avast in
c:\program files\Avast4\

… use this one (attached).
