won't scan at reboot

When asked to confirm deletion of virus during boot time scan, selecting ‘yes’ has no effect and the scan aborts.

What exactly was the question (including the filename) and what exactly did you press?
Thanks.

Here is what appears on the screen when it will go no further:-

Scan of all local drives
Report file: D:\Program Files\Avast4\DATA\report\aswBoot.txt

File C:\Documents and settings\Owner\Local settings\Temp\adlinstallwin32.exe is infected by win32:Trojan-gen. (other)

1-Delete, 2-Delet all, 3-Move, 4-Move all, 5-Repair, 6-Repair all, 7-Ignore, 8-Ignore all, Esc-Exit:

I I choose any number or press any key there simply appears a ? on the screen

What version (build) of avast! do you have?
Do you press the keys on the “normal” keyboard (i.e. the numbers right above the letters), or rather on the numeric pad?

It is Avast home edition, current version of virus data base 0451-1,14/12/04

I have used the numbers directly above the letters, not the number keypads

Well, I meant the build of the program (something like 4.5.549)
Could you try the numeric pad as well, please?
Is your keyboard any special (I mean, anyhow different from standard English keyboard)?

I suppose you’re not using an USB keyboard ::slight_smile: ???

Ah, I’ve discovered it is version 4.1-418
Standard English keyboard

What is the connection type of the keyboard?

ps2, din, usb?

If you don’t know, look at the connector that connects the keyboard with the system and tell us how it looks.

ps : do not take the connector out when the system is still powered !

Ok, that is a ps2 connector.

Is this a multimedia keyboard or a standard 101/102 keys keyboard?
Do you have many extra buttons on the keyboard like for email, sound volume, web, files, search and such?

Could you try the latest build of avast!, please? (4.5.549)
I think I have slightly improved the keyboard handling of the boot-time scanner in avast! 4.5 (e.g. the numeric pad support).

Have just updated to latest program version and scheduled a boot-time scan. When I restarted, my computer (in DOS) asked my if I wanted to use Windows XP home or Windows XP pro ediotion (as normal). I chose XP Pro by pressing the enter key on the keyboard.

Then no scan happened, windows just loaded up.
Then I when I tried to reschedule another boot-scan, Avast told me that I already had one scheduled.

I tried another reboot but the same thing happened.

Any ideas?
thanks
Janet

You does not have to boot in DOS.
You must boot in the same operational system that you schedule the scanning…
Are you using dual boot? (I mean, can you boot in XP Home and XP Pro by choice?)

I am not booting in DOS. I just meant that during startup, whilst the computer still appears to be in DOS (with black screen etc) we have to choose XPPro or XPHome

We MAY have dual boot but we only ever choose WinXP Pro at startup. It is definately WinXP Pro that we always choose.

thanks

Did you reboot the computer after the update (before you scheduled the scan for the first time)? Are you booting still the same operating system?

Try to unschedule it and then schedule again. Additionally - do you happen to have the /noguiboot switch in your boot.ini file?
