I have tried the aswclear from the avast homepage.
it gets rid of files/folders but my computer still tells me that it is my virus protection and still running.
I went into my Reg and noticed allot of avast enteries and yet it would not let me delete them .
does anyone know what is going on?

You are not very clear on what the problem is.
Please provide more information like:
What OS?
What security (related) software do you have installed?
What EXACTLY is the problem?
etc etc.
If you install avast! again, boot, and from the Control Panel you uninstall it, boot again, I think you’ll be ok.
Why are you trying to uninstall avast! :
