Word malware?

I have heard that word documents can contain malware, is this true?
I mean the file type is .doc, and I have macro disable (Office 2007 'n 2010)

How can I see and how can I prevent?

Hehe true. I asked on Avast because Google does not give much info and this forum has much more experienced malware fighters.
