I run Spybot on my computer to keep it clear of spyware. Well, it has happened since I installed the program that I get an error message that says Xabot and then some German wording. I didn’t give it much thought because it was in my spyware program and not in Avast. Well, today I decided to run a search in Google and found that it is a Worm! I went to Symantic and they give a HUGE list of stuff this worm does, and the MULTIPLE steps I need to take to get rid of it. My guess is that it was already on the computer because my computer is previously owned by someone who did a lot of 2p2 stuff, including games and Kazzaa (which I removed when I got the computer). My questions is this: Is this a worm that Avast is unaware of? I know that my Avast didn’t catch it and that there is nothing on the site about this particular problem. I know that it’s going to be REALLY difficult for me to get rid of this mess (there is registry stuff and tons of steps to take to get things back to normal).
Has anyone else had this problem before? And what would be my best plan for getting this problem under control? :-
Here is the information you might need:
OS=Windows XP
avast! version 4.1
VSP=0445-0
Intel Pentium 4, 2.40 GHz, 1.75 GB RAM
Connect to the Internet using cable modem with Sygate Firewall
E-mail client is web based-usually yahoo
Do you use some other security software? I use Sygate firewall, adaware, Spybot, and periodically run an online scan with Housecall.
What are the steps to reproduce the bug again? Only when I use Spybot do I know this is there. I don’t know how it affects my computer, since it probably was on here when I bought it.
Do any error messages appear? In Spybot, the program stops scanning and gives the error “Error during check!: Xabot (Ungültiger Datentyp für)”
I hope this will help!
Thanks so much for your time!

Since this system belonged to someone else, best you can do as format and do a clean install of the things you want to have on it. When removing applications, most of them leave some things behind “poluting” the system.
If you don’t want/can’t do that. I suggest you have a look at the page in my signature to clean your system from the malware.
And browse your system looking for temp files/folders, empty folders and such and remove them manually.

Thanks for your help. I will just have to go out and buy Windows XP and reinstall it. I agree about cleaning up…this has been a concern of mine since we bought the computer. It is still worth the price we paid, even if we have to go out and buy the software. I’ll let you know how it goes!
PS will reinitializing the drive and reinstalling Windows XP completely clean out this worm? Wait, I think you said it would! d’oh
Thanks!!!
