XP Crash - Unable to Backup - Help Please

Hi Everybody. I have had the dreaded BSOD about 10 seconds after I try to run Windows Backup. It happens everytime I attempt a backup. Bluescreen viewer reports NTOSKERNL.EXE as the problem. AVAST has found various problems during a boot scan but the most serious seems to be RCDSETUP.EXE Installer Archive is corrupted. I have run the Intel processor tester, memory test from boot, SpyBot, Malwarebytes as well as OTS (I have no idea what the log file means unfortunately). The suggestion to run OTS came from your forum where a member posted the same error message as I have regarding RCDSETUP but there did not seem to be a conclusion to the post? I have a Western Digital external drive which also went crazy when I tried to use the built in sync software so at this point I have no way to back up my PC. I really would appreciate so help please. I have the OTS log file if required. Thanks in advance.

have the OTS log file if required.

Nothing readilly apparent in the log…

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Here is the file, Thanks for the help. Computer is running fine but I have not tried a “backup” using windows backup program yet.

Could you try a backup please and let me know of any errors

Please let me know if you need any more information?

What are you using to backup ?

Standard Windows XP Backup utility found in Accesories/System Tools. Attempting to backup to a WD external USB drive?

Have you got an windows xp cd rom and boot off it & run recovery console & do a repair of xp by getting to administrator prompt c:
and run chkdisk \p ? to repair curupt sys files

Have you at any stage used Acronis or something similar ?

The error is within a windows system file

Hi Bobo - done that, no improvement.

Essexboy - I have never used Acronis. I have only tried the built in Western Digital software called SMARTWARE which caused other problems. I am unable to work out what is causing a system reboot 10 seconds into a Microsoft utility? I have no idea if it is software or hardware? I am leaning towards software but who knows? I do not seem to have any other hardware issues.

It is just that I have noticed that using any other backup software messes with the windows one to such an extent that it is unusable

I have completely removed any Western Digital software from my machine. I had problems with the software (or at least I think I had problems with the wd software, it may be the same problem I have with the windows software) so, at this point I am unable to perform a backup and do not know if it is WD Software, Windows backup software or a hardware problem like a failing motherboard or processor. I have the same problem when running with the harddrive unplugged from a boot disk. Tried unplugging memory 1 at a time, still same problem. This should eliminate loaded version of windows as well as harddrive and memory. That leaves the processor and the motherboard. Tested the processor using Intel’s utility, no problem there.

My only hope is that it is some kind of other problem and that someone much smarter than I am can read the attached “Blue Screen Viewer” report and shed some light on what I could try next.

Could you attach the report ;D

Thank you for the information regarding backup software. I do not want to load any extra programs until I have the Windows backup working. I would like to be assured that I have no virus, no hardware failing, and no software problems before loading extra programs. I attach the file generated by windows and saved by Blue Screen Viewer. Please let me know if I need to try annything else. Thank You VERY much for your assistance.

BAD_POOL_HEADER
Is generally a driver problem, however as it runs through ntoskernel then it may be hard to determine which one

Could you upload this dump C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini111012-01.dmp to a file sharing site so that I can download and analyse it, there may be a clue there as to which driver is responsible

I’m will try Pando in the next message?
