XP Home not booting, hangs at aswrvrt.sys

Hello,

I need your help, please.

I was researching how to set up (and setting up) shares on my 32-bit XP Home PC when Firefox froze. I force-quit Firefox but when I tried to restart it I got a message that it was still running. I checked the task manager and did not find it in the processes list, then I rebooted my computer in safe mode.

When I booted in safe mode it froze after aswrvrt.sys. When I booted normally or with last known good configurations it hangs on the Windows loading screen. In any case, if I let my PC run it will reboot.

Also, prior to rebooting I activated some services that had to do with sharing, I don’t remember which specifically.

I followed the directions in this post: [url=http:// http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=130459.0]http:// http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=130459.0 [/url] and have attached the FRST report.

Thank you for your time.

hey and welcome to the avast forum. a malware expert will help you when one is online later today.

Initially I will try a restore point to see if that works

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST as before and press Fix
On completion retry normal mode

It rebooted at the Windows loading screen.

Attached is another FRST

Did it go to a blue screen with a stop code ?

If not could you go to the safe mode menu and select Disable automatic restart on system failure
Reboot and let me know what the stop error code is

Stop Code:

0x0000000A (OxF79B2354, 0x000000FF, 0x00000001, 0x804E5589)

The suggestions on MS support require the install CD, which I can’t find.

I’m looking into options to possibly backup files.

Unless you have other suggestions (I’m in no hurry), these are my plans:

  • Backup files.
  • Find XP Home install CD and attempt repair.
  • If necessary, new OS

Thanks

That is a very broad error code, I can give you a programme that will enable you to make a backup of your personal data if you wish

I’m able to back everything up by running Ubuntu off a DVD. I would like that program though, please, just in case.

Since I got such a broad error code and I don’t have an install cd, and I’m able to backup my files, I assume formatting and changing my OS would my best option. Any other suggestions before I do that?

Do you know what might have caused this? Could it have been a virus?

This was not to the best of my knowledge a virus, there have been a spate of these lately for some unknowable reason maybe related to windows updates I do not know

Changing OS would be a good option as XP is now at the end of life to all intents and purposes, and I will imagine that once MS stops patching it all the zero day exploits being kept by the malware writers will be released

Download Peazip to the desktop
Run and install the programme
As it installs this page will show, deselect the AVG ticks

Once the USB has burnt then you have an XP type operating system on a stick

That’s a good point about XP.

Thanks for time and help! And thanks for those downloads.

My pleasure
