XP locking up with free version of aVast!?!?

I recently download and installed the free version of aVast and all seems to be going well. However, I’ve been reading some articles that indicate the using this program can cause your computer to seize up if you’re using XP Home edition.

  1. Why is that?
  2. Is there a patch that clears up the problem?
  3. What should I do if it happens to me?

I also heard that aVast only has 25,000 definitions available to the free version.

  1. Is that too few?
  2. Do the cost version have more?
  3. Please advise…

Hi Brett,

  • I’ve heard of no avast-related problems with the latest program update.
your PC runs fine ? then don’t worry…

  • avast detects several members of the same malware family under one name, so it detects about as many viruses as the rest out there…

the last topic has been adressed numerous times in this board, please use the SEARCH above for details

No troubles with Windows XP Home. Take it easy… 8)

avast! is the best antivirus running today. The virus definitions - as whocares smartly answered - join lots of “family” virus. For the question about the Professional version, the answer is no: the user has the same definitions for free (Home) and Professional version. The differences are in the customization features and high Internet protection (see http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1018.html)

By the way, I´m an avast! user not from avast! corporation (Alwil Software)

Brett,
you shouldn’t have any problems with stability unless you have another antivirus shield installed on the same machine (such as Norton).

As for the number-of-viruses-detected question, please refer e.g. to http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=200 .

Brett, Vlk is right…
If you have any trouble with Norton, just let me know (send me an IM).
I´m becoming a master of “washing” computers from Norton ;D

XP Home and a new computer have upped my cussing considerably this past week. I have just run Avast4 for the first time and I got a total lockup after it completely scanned. I never installed Nortons and NEVER would. I need to find some answers soon.

Later: By taking Avast4 out of my start menu I had no lock up.
