YOU GUSY ARE GREAT! PLEASE HELP!

1st time poster 1st time register…any old way so my free avast home software i DL’d from cnet.com
expired and THEN i went to go register my product…BAD move!

i put in my liscence key and thought it was all good but i guess since the software expiered it turned off the anti-virus. Then i was told by my computer that i got a virus and had possible data loss/application loss etc

PLEASE HELP i cant open WORD.exe basically any software.

i went into avast and i looked at the program which resembled a Microsoft Media PLayer type skin which ive never seen before.

before all of this my avast was located at the bottom right hand of the screen by the clock but it no longer there anymore. when i would click on it there was a different/bigger/simpler interface.

on this new interface (i think because i tried re-DL’ing the software since i got a new liscence key) theres a scroll for Anti-virus protection and when i first looked at it it said disabled…so i moved the meter up to HIGH protection closed the little window went back and it still said ‘DISABLED’…

WHAT DO I DO PLEASE HELP. SORRY for wordiness.

God Bless!

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning. Boot.
  6. Check and post the results.

My worst fears yet! i cannot even access firefox/the internet on this laptop… ???

Follow Tech’s advice.

However do your downloading by using an uninfected computer, and save your downloads to a removable flash drive (make sure this drive is uninfected also - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=48291.msg407711#msg407711). When you have your downloads ready to use on the flash drive then copy them across to Program Files in your computer. You can do this and the rest of the procedures with your computer unhooked from the internet. Follow the steps Tech has given you and, when prompted at conclusion of install, let the boot-time scan run at Restart. You will probably see detections of malware and best move them to the virus chest where they are held in quarantine.

And make sure report back here how you doing.

you guys are much appreciated!..probably wont have time to do it until this weekend. check back then. thanks PS - 1 - How do ilet it ‘boot-time scan’? it’ll ask me if i want to? - 2 - when i ‘see those detections of malware’, how do i ‘move them to the virus chest’?? is it a click and drag type interface or will there be directories i’ll have to input?

The Avast! user guide tells you how to schedule a boot time scan and has pictures. Make sure to select “scan archive files”.

You can accept the boot time scanning after the installation or you can follow yawetage’s advice.

Click the button “Send to Chest” on the virus alert.
