I keep getting a Avast pop up alert saying that “your free antivirus will expire soon”. is this genuine, as I read in Google that it may be a fake, which would account for my compromised system?
Thank you

what avast! version do you have ?
when did you install it ?
when did you register it ?
Version 4.8 Home Edition
Build Sep2009 (4.8.1368)
expiration 1 feb 2011
Is the pop-up genuine? I pressed the install button and nothing happened but since then I have nothing but troubles.
The task manager at the moment show hundreds of entries of ashMaiSv.exe and ashWebSv.exe.
Thanks for your help

it is genuine, support for avast! 4.X will end this year
download and install the new ( OBS: does not support W98 )
Avast! Free Antivirus 5.0.677 http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
On-line registration is very simple and it’s the preferred method for all users of avast Free Antivirus 5.x installed on a computer with standard Internet connectivity. To perform on-line registration follow these steps:

I will do that. Should I uninstall the current Avast? I would appreciate your opinion on why the Task Manager shows so many Avast entries. I am attaching a .doc file with print screens.
(having said that .doc files are not allowed…)
Thanks

you can install avast 5 on top of 4.8 it will then read the license info from avast 4.8 and uninstall it.
But i would do a clean install, uninstall the old first and then install the new and reboot, then use the online register
I would appreciate your opinion on why the Task Manager shows so many Avast entries.not sure about this, see how it is when you have installed the new!
also recomended to install as an extra scanner is Malwarebytes
(remember to always update before you scan as MBAM is releasing many updates every day)
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
But i would do a clean install, uninstall the old first and then install the new and reboot, then use the online register
Sorry to go on… but how do I do a clena install, uninstall of the old first? Through Add/Remove progs?
Thanks
qim
Yes, uninstall the old one from Add/remove programs (programs and features in Vista/7), reboot your computer and then install version 5.0
Thanks. I’ve done it and can close tghis thread.

Just go back to your first post and click the Modify button in it, now add [Resolved] to the topic’s Subject. Like I have done for this post.
