Zone Alarm 6.5

Has anyone downloaded and installed Zone Alarm 6.5? If so, have there been any problems.? I have 6.0 and always am a little nervous downloading updated software especially Zone Alarm. ::slight_smile:

Hi RoRo
Yes I have installed ZA 6.5.722 Pro for a few weeks now without a problem, however I am using the ZA pro version not Free. I do follow a strict uninstall process when ever I update ZA.
Here is a link to the uninstall procedure supplied by a member of another forum and info obtained from the Zonelabs Forums.

ZoneAlarm Uninstall and backup process
I have not had a problem using this method Hope it helps

I’ve installed 6.5.722 Free on six computers with no problems at all. I just installed as an update over the old version.

Thank you both. I will install the new update today.

Too bad you did not use this forum's "search" ; you would
have found the topic I started which is now on Page 3 of
 this "General" forum at :

Spiritsongs,
There isn’t anything wrong with ZA.
I don’t know why you insist on continuing to send people to a thread
warning users not to use the current version of ZA.
The danger is that using outdated software may leave your system
vulnerable.

Actually there were some fairly serious problems with one of the sub-version upgrades in 6.5 (.714, I think it was). That one messed up Eudora and several other common apps, but seems to have been fixed in .722.

And not just that… many people reported sudden system restarts “without” any reason… not quite “without”… the reason was ZoneAlarm. Even ZoneLabs wrote something about that and admited the same thing.

Unfortunatelly same thing happened on my AMD system, although it never happened on Intel Pentium 4 with HT (HyperThreading Technology). However, I uninstalled it once for ever and ZA will never ever touch my system again. Not just because of that, but because there are some other problems with them, and besides… ZA started to look more and more like one of those ugly system hogs.

Well, I installed the 6.5.722 update, and haven’t had any problems at all so far. Since Zone Alarm works well on my desktop, I haven’t changed it. I use Kerio on my older Windows 98SE machine, and on my laptop with AMD 1600 too. Both don’t have a lot of RAM, so I need a firewall that doesn’t use a lot of resources.

Glad to here that roro.

I think 6.5.722 fixed some problems (or maybe we’re just lucky ;D)

 Hi Bob ( and Others ) :

There are still people posting in the PC Mag Discussion
forum about their ZA 6.5 problems at :

 http://discuss.pcmag.com/forums/1004325243/ShowPost.aspx .

However, the June 30 & July 7 posts were about
"dumprep.exe 100% CPU utilization" problems with ZA .

But in fairness it should be noted that ZA says this is a rare occurence.

From the ZA thread:

“100% CPU/dumprep – This is an issue we’ve unfortunately not yet solved. Although this is a rare occurrence among our customers thus far, we have managed to get a hold of a computer with this issue and are isolating the cause as I write. I hope to have an update to you and our other customers soon”

I tried 6.5.722 (least I’m pretty sure that was the version, I deleted the installer, but it was the 6/21 release), but that ended up causing a problem with System Restore where checkpoints were taking about 300 megs of space to create, and can consume about a couple hundred megs in a matter of hours. So I uninstalled the thing, loaded 6.1 and am waiting for the next version.
