Hi everyone,
I use both Zone Alarm and Avast 4.6 and I have two problems :
1- I cannot update Avast 4.6.
2- I cannot define Avast as resident protection.
Can someone explain how to solve them ? Thanks very much.

What version of avast and ZA are you using? (Home/Pro, and version number)
Hello David,
1- I am using a free version of Zone Alarm (version number 5.5.109.000) and Avast 4.6 (free of course).
2- I already erased the ZoneAlarm Compatibility line in the file avast.setup, so I guess the answer to your question is yes.
3- Probably. The problem is I cannot define Avast as resident protection with the Avast interface.
The thing is Avast and ZA used to work together since a virus caused me to format my computer. I cannot remember how I managed to make them “compatible”.
I cannot remember how I managed to make them "compatible".You don't have to make them compatible, they already are but, you have to authorize avast in ZA. If you block avast! , then it can't update.
Re. 2. That isn’t the question I asked, in ZA’s Programs section is avast.setup allowed access to the internet?
Removing the Compatibility line entry from the avast4.ini file (you can’t edit avast.setup) for ZA Compatibility relates only to web shield, won’t effect whether ZA allows avast.setup or not, that can only be achieved in ZA.
Re. 3. I still don’t understand, please explain what it is you are trying to do.
ZA and avast do work well together the only compatibility issue relates to the Privacy controls that are only available in ZA Pro. There really are only three files that need internet access, ashMaiSv.exe (avast Mail Server), ashWebSV.exe (avast Web Shield) and avast.setup, which handles the avast updates.
Try this and tell me what happens.
Right click the avast icon, Updating, and select iAVS Update. avast will now try check for updates (you need to be connected to the internet already), ZA may ask if avast.setup should be allowed access, say yes. If ZA doesn’t ask permission it may already be blocked
