and I can’t open my computer or explore or internet until it does. I get this message if I tried to start it from the system tray: “the AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error” I found this subject in FAQ followed advice but no luck. Can anyone help.

What firewall do you use ? There is one that does cause an inordinately long time for Avast to start
RPC error is generally related to other antivirus present or, at least, firewall blocking. RPC error may also be because of avast! services being stopped. Anyway, RPC error is most likely correct by this procedure:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the pop up window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?
Do you use a firewall? Which one?
Also, take a look into Administrative Tools > Services
and see how the four avast services are set to start (automatically or manual).
Thanks for your replies. I have looked through all (I think) but to no avail.
My fire wall is from windows xp tablet ed sp2. turned it off but no help.
All avast services are set to auto.
Hope to avoid a repair or reinstall because I’ve finally got the overall system running well & I don’t want to rock the boat.
I wonder if this problem is about the setting on the 4 avast items within services i.e the reovery or depenencies tabs.
Or can I change the order of events under system configuration utility?
Any thoughts?

No, you can’t change the dependency or the startup order of these services.
Anyway, it won’t help. This is not the problem. The services load this way (automatic or manual):
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service > AUTOMATIC)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service > AUTOMATIC)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service > MANUAL)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner > MANUAL)
