4.8.1192 froze my laptop on reboot

I used the program updater in avast! to go from 4.8.1187 to 4.8.1192. I gave the ok to avast! to reboot after installing 4.8.1192. When it rebooted it froze on the welcome screen. I had to do a forced shut down (held down the on button till it shut down). I then went into safe mode & uninstalled avast! with the uninstaller tool (ashClear). After reboot I installed Avira Antivir. :o ::slight_smile: I want to go back to avast! , but I want to wait till 4.8 is fixed.

Boot up with Avira is quick like versions of avast! before 4.8.

Iā€™ve never had a problem with avast! before now. I donā€™t feel as safe with Avira as I did with avast!

I still have avast! 4.8.1187 on my desktop, but now Iā€™m afraid to do a program update. :frowning:

Just give it another try. Could have been a glitch.

Why donā€™t you try reinstall avast after you uninstall it? And now your having 2 anti virus on your laptop and that must be conflict!

I went ahead & tried 4.8.1192 on my desktop. I got the same result, it froze on the welcome screen.

Did a forced shut down, booted into safe mode, uninstalled avast!, reinstalled avast! 4.8.1169.
Everything is ok. Awaiting the next betaā€¦

rassel,

I donā€™t have two antiviruses on my laptop, just one.

Install avast, rebot and let it hang at the welcome screen, hit the reset button and boot in safe mode, then try to boot in normal mode again. (Leave avast install!). Is this working?

What other things are loading at boottime?
If you want post a hijackthis log here.

Sorry. When i read, i use quick read so i saw that you said you have installed Avira and then avast to your system.

hit the reset button
???

The only option I have when 4.8.1192 hangs at the welcome screen is to do a forced shutdown. Am I missing something? Where is the ā€œreset buttonā€?

The reset button is normally located near the power button on a system.
If your system does not have it, do the power down, as you did before to get insto safe mode.

Reset buttons seem to have gone the same way as diskette drives on the new machines I have encountered in the last few years.

Neither of my cheap computers have a reset button.

If your system does not have it, do the power down, as you did before to get insto safe mode.

Eddy,

Iā€™m doing ok with ā€¦1169, if the next beta hangs I will try your suggestion. Any other ideas to try if my system hangs again?

Thanks for your help.

You can also disable ALL things from loading at boottime that are not really needed for the system to run, then install the beta and see what happens. If it doesnā€™t hang, you will know it is a conflict with things you load at boot-time.

Thank you.

Another thing you can try is StartupDelayer. So the applications are not loading at the same time when booting. This can also prevent conflicts/boot problems.

I use WinPatrol to delay seven of my startups to allow the most important to load sooner.

It would be interesting to get a full dump for the freeze.
The description how to do it is e.g. here or here:
http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71

So, I guess it would be best to perform the necessary modifications in 1169 or 1187 (one that works), then update to 1192, and if it freezes, press the magic shortcut.
What OS do you have, btw?

I donā€™t have anywhere to put the ā€œdumpsā€ for you to download them.

My OS is XP Home Edition SP3 on both computers.

My laptop is a Dell, desktop is eMachines.

Common start ups to both machines are avast!, WinPatrol, ZoneAlarm, SSM, Weather Watcher, Tiny Spell & eprompter.

I hope this info will give you at least a little help at diagnosing this problem.

You upload the dumps (with a unique name, like rdmaloyjr-freeze.dmp or a .rar or same) to the avast ftp space.

Having created the dump file - You can use the ftp server to upload big files. Upload them to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming - Connect to the link and drag the file into the Right pane and drop it, that starts the upload, you donā€™t have read access to this folder.

I took Eddyā€™s suggestion to disable most start ups from running & updated to '1192. This time I got no freeze, no problems. I was on '1169 so I couldnā€™t use the manual update as before, I used http://files.avast.com/files/beta/aswbeta.exe this time. If it was a problem with '1192, I donā€™t it would matter if I went from '1187 or '1169 to '1192.

Thank you, Eddy!

Iā€™m pretty sure I know which start up item caused the problem.
