See my comment to one of your other posts (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34503.msg289334#msg289334), to enable the ‘Show detailed info on performed action’ to really see if you are doing nothing.
Also when this is a 53% and it is for ashServ.exe is the avast icon rotation ?
I suppose you’re using avast Home and not Pro with an schedule scanning (Task) running…
I have a Dell (Windows XP) and have used Avast for several years without problems. On Sunday I switched on my computer. It booted up, Avast updated, presumably to 4.8 and I got the dreaded blue screen of death. Nothing else has changed for several weeks.
My son-in-law came and managed to reboot - can’t give details- he re-set it to what it was a couple of days before and I managed to use it all day. This morning Avast updated when I switched it on and I am back to the blue screen. I can only e-mail you by using our other computer. Incidentally this has Avast too and seems OK, maybe a little slow but as I’m not the one who usually switches this one on it is hard to tell.
The blue screen of death says.
STOP 0000008E (0xC0000005 0x8052ADC3 0xA9FC4768 )
I knowm im not doing anything because the system has cold booted and yes the icon does rotate.
I have Avast Pro and no scedule task running!
Tricia,
It sounds to me like your Son-in-law did a ‘System Restore’. That would explain your statement, “re-set it to what it was a couple of days before”. Invoking a ‘System Restore’ gets your system back to before the avast program update. If that’s what your Son-in-law did, you can call him on the phone and he could talk you through that a System restore again.
After he does, then don’t let avast update again. Instead, ‘right-click’ on the avast blue ball, then ‘program settings’, then click on ‘update basic’. You will see two choices there… one for ‘virus database’, and the second one for ‘program’. Change program to ‘manual’ update until the problem can be figured out.
Also, when you post back, tell us what your OS (Operating System) is and what type of firewall (if any) you’re using. Also, if you have or had any other AV (anti-virus) program installed on your computer.
Hope this helps.
Oops. I see Tricia (UK) has reposted here:

disregard above by me :
Humour me and enable the the ‘Show detailed info on performed action’ and see what avast is scanning, the reason why it is rotating. avast doesn’t just go off and scan things without reason, that reason may lie in what is being scanned.
how do i do this?
Double click on the avast icon in the System Tray > Select the Standard Shield > Click on “Customize” > “Advanced” tab > Check box “Show detailed info on action performed” > OK
This will cause a popup list to appear above the tray showing the names of the files being scanned by the Standard Shield.
If the icon is rotating then, as DavidR has told you, it is not “doing nothing” but is scanning something. The popup list will tell what is being scanned and DavidR is asking that you report this.
When you have had enough of this fun then repeat the above process and uncheck the box to return to a calmer world.
