4.8 keeps prompting to update.. I don't want 5

I have a new reg# for this year as mine expires Jan and have changed my reg, however this time I still keep getting the upgrade prompt.

Is there a way to stop that? I set the pref’s to not check for app updates and that did not do the trick.

Thanks but I find v5.xx to be a bulky hog of an app.

Version 5 is lighter in resources than version 4.8
Besides, 4.8 version support will end in next months.

Absolutely no doubt about it. And Avast 5.1 is a far better and more efficient security program then v.4.8 in so many ways

Are you worried that the key will not work in version 5.1? You can convert the key to license file and insert it in avast 5.1 pro. Let us know if that is what you are worried about.

no it’s the free version which was prompting me to renew my registration (I did)but also keeps asking me to update to v5.

I have tried v5 before and found it to be bulky… I guess I will give try 5.1 a go at this time,I can always downgrade if it’s still an issue.

Bulky in the sense what?

There are many improvements in the detection, settings etc. So it is really worth a try.

Although installing over the 4.8 works, sometimes it might cause problems. So,

  1. Please download the avast setup file from here : http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe ,
  2. Download the avast uninstall utility : http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
  3. Uninstall v4 via control panel and reboot to safe mode.
  4. Open (execute) the uninstall utility and select avast 4 option in the drop down menu.
  5. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
  6. Click REMOVE
  7. Restart your computer to normal mode.
  8. Then install v5.1 using the setup file you downloaded in step 1.

interestingly enough 4.8 stopped bother me to update after the registration past due date. This even though I had given it a new # before it expired.

Did you do as in reply #5?
