You’re probably using Windows 98…
Which is your firewall?
Any other antivirus installed in this computer? And in the past?

Does your firewall allow access to ashWebSv.exe to the internet?

Sorry fellas couldn’t stay awake any longer. I have windows XP and Norton firewall running.
Cheers David

So, why did you change email settings?
They should only be changed in Windows 98\Me (dee http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=display;board=2;threadid=7913;start=0#msg64228)

Did you allow the following programs to connect?

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

It told me if I had problems with email not connecting on FAQ to type localhost 10280.
I think it did I just hit the exe file I downloaded and let it do the rest.

Also ensure that your firewall allows ashMaiSv.exe otherwise you will get this connection error that comes from your email program, which wouldn’t know that the firewall is blocking access, just that it can’t connect.

The FAQ I think you will find is related to win98, but no matter now, there is also confusion as to which FAQ you were looking at as the localhost 10280 relates to the Web Shield manual setting of the browser, nothing to do with email.

  1. What is your email program?
  2. How do you view your email? e.g. using your browser (hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) or downloading it using your email program into your inbox.

What is important is not to edit your email account settings and ensure the email scanner has access to the internet otherwise you will get the failed connection warning.

 Hi David I will have a look .I had a play over the weekend found it worked when I disabled Norton firewall. What can I do to prevent it from blocking Avast.
Cheers David

You will need to look in the programs/applications area of your firewall (I’ve never used Norton firewall) and you will probably find that this has been blocked, delete the entry (or if you can modify it to allow access) and check your email. The firewall should detect this and ask you if it is allowed access, say yes.
